Performing an on-demand backup
The system is designed to perform unattended backups at scheduled intervals. However, you can perform on-demand backups at any time if required.
NOTE: Another type of backup that you can perform outside of a schedule is called initial backup. For more information, see
“Initial backups”.
To perform an on-demand backup:
1. Click the Backup Sets tab.
2. Select the backup for which you want to perform an on-demand backup.
3. On the Backup menu, click Backup Now.
4. Select the items you wan to include in the backup.
5. Select the options for the selected items, and then click Next.
6. To copy files to the DS-Client buffer, select the Use buffer check box. This frees up the backup source as fast as possible. The DS-Client then sends the files from the DS-Client buffer to the DS-System.
7. To record all files that are backed up, select the Detail log check box.
8. To delay starting the backup, select the Start at check box, and then enter the time you want the backup to start. Leave this box blank to start the demand backup immediately.
9. To read the digital signature from the latest online generation of each unchanged file and compare it with the digital signature that was generated from the current source file, select the Verify signature for unchanged files check box. If the signatures do not match, DS-Client backs up the file again in the same backup session.
This option is available only for File System backups and email backups that use DS-MLR. It applies only to the latest file generation and cannot be used with the Use Buffer option.
IMPORTANT: Selecting this option slows down the backup performance because unchanged files that are normally skipped must be processed.
10. In the Stop on errors box, enter the number of errors that must occur before a backup is stopped.
11. To perform a scan of all the files in the backup to estimate a time for completion, select the PreScan check box.
12. In the Default operation box, specify how DS-Client should handle any open files during backup. The options are as follows:
• Try deny write – Attempts to open a backup file in the Deny write mode. If the file is already open, DS-Client places the backup file in the Allow write mode.
• Deny write – Prevents any other process from writing to the backup file, if it is open in the DS-Client.
• Prevent write – Attempts to open the backup file in the Deny write mode. If the file is already open, DS-Client places the backup file in the Allow write mode and locks it.
• Allow write – Allows another process to read/write to the backup file. This can affect file consistency.
13. In the Retry times box, enter the number of times you want the DS-Client to attempt to back up the file.
14. In the Retry interval box, enter the interval between the retry attempts.
NOTE: These options do not guarantee that an open file will be backed up. To back up locked files, you must use the VSS option or a VSS backup.
15. To back up data on remote media, select the Back up data in Remote Storage check box.
16. To back up each instance of a file separately, select the Back up Single Instance Store/Data Deduplication file data check box. This option is only available if the operating system supports the Single Instance Store service.
17. To back up all data in a folder referenced by a junction point, select the Follow junction point check box.
NOTE: Junction points are links to other folders. If disabled, only links to the folder are backed up. Junction points that are mounted FAT or FAT32 volumes are not supported.
18. Click Finish.
