Performing an incremental restore
Before performing an incremental virtual machine restore, consider the following:
• Incremental restore is available only on a Linux DS-Client.
• The virtual machine must already exist in the target restore destination as a result of a previous virtual machine restore.
• To perform an incremental virtual machine restore, you must select the Attempt incremental restore check box. Otherwise, the DS-Client performs a full virtual machine restore by default.
• In the first restore session after a VMware vCenter Server backup has been configured for an incremental virtual machine restore, the DS-Client performs a full virtual machine restore and saves the backup information with the restored virtual machine. On subsequent restores, the DS-Client attempts an incremental virtual machine restore for that restore session until you clear the check box.
• When a restored virtual machine is powered on, the VM configuration parameters will likely change. As a result, the DS-Client disallows further incremental virtual machine restores and forces a full virtual machine restore in the next restore session.
• To test a restored virtual machine, clone the virtual machine using the VMware tools, and use the clone. Do not test the restored virtual machine directly.
• Do not power on a restored virtual machine in the VMware vCenter Server unless you are using the restored virtual machine as a production machine.
• During an incremental virtual machine restore, the DS-Client compares the backup generation to be restored and the virtual machine at the destination location. If the DS-Client detects any differences in the virtual machine configuration parameters, it forces a full virtual machine restore.
