DS-Client Help : Managing backups : Migrating a backup

Migrating a backup
Migration allows you to continue using a backup and its accumulated backup data if the physical location of the backup source files or the source computer’s name, IP address, or operating system is changed. Migration is also part of the process of recovering an orphaned backup. For more information, see “Recovering an orphaned backup”.
When migrating a backup, consider the following:
You cannot migrate a backup containing special backup items such as Windows System State and Services Database to a different operating system. To migrate a backup containing these items, you must delete all generations of the special backup items and remove them from the backup.
When migrating items from one file system to another, verify that the backup item options are compatible on the new file system.
If you perform a bare metal restore from a migrated backup, ensure that you only restore operating system files from the same backup session. Otherwise, you might restore a combination of incompatible files from different versions of the operating system.
If you move data to another server and keep the same path format for the data, the DS-Client continues to back up data incrementally for the migrated backup. For example, if you move data from e$\data to e$\data on the new server, the DS-Client processes incremental backups for those files.
If you move data to another server but do not keep the same path format for the data, the DS-Client performs an initial backup. For example, if you move data from e$\data to e$\newlocation\data on the new server, the DS-Client sends new masters of files after migration.
NOTE:  DS-Client supports the migration of standalone Microsoft Exchange Server backups to DAG backups. It does not support the migration from DAG to standalone.
To migrate a backup:
1. Click the Backup Sets tab.
2. Select the backup you want to migrate.
3. On the Sets menu, point to Backup Sets, and then click Migrate.
4. Select the backup source location to which you want to migrate the backup, and then click Next.
5. For each existing location in the Source column, specify the share to which the data should be migrated in the Destination column, and then click Next.
NOTE:  If the physical location of the source data has changed, the share that you select in the destination column is the new location of the source item. The DS‑Client restricts the migration to a one‑to‑one match so you cannot select the same destination share for two different source shares.
6. Ensure that the new path that has been assigned to each backup item is correct, add more items if required, and then click Next.
7. Select the required options, and then click Finish.
NOTE:  The backup item options that are available depend on the network to which you are migrating the backup and can differ from the options that were previously available when creating the backup.
IMPORTANT:  We recommend that you synchronize the backup after performing a migration. For more information, see “Synchronizing a backup”.
