Specifying the backup items
The Select items for backup screen appears.
1. Select the items you want to back up and click Add.
2. After you have selected the required backup items, and click Next.
Items for backup could include the following:
Applications
An application is a specific list of libraries you create for backup.
a) To create or modify an application, click Applications.
b) In the Modify Applications screen, select the libraries belonging to a particular application and click Modify.
c) In the Select Applications screen, enter or choose a name in the Application name field and click OK.
d) In the Modify Applications screen, the application name appears to the left of the selected libraries. Click OK to return to the Items List screen.
The application created will appear in the Applications folder.
NOTE: The "Selected Items for Backup" list cannot contain applications and libraries at the same time.
IBM System Libraries
The System i pre-loaded with the operating system and additional licensed programs that support the System i OS. Most of the IBM System Libraries (or IBM Supplied Libraries) begin with the letter ‘Q’. You can choose individual IBM System Libraries for backup directly. The entire contents of the selected IBM System Library (or libraries) will be backed up.
• If you want to backup all the IBM System Libraries from the System i server, highlight the object “IBM System Libraries” and click Add.
NOTE: “IBM System Libraries” cannot be backed up as individual objects.
IBM User Libraries
Although some libraries with names that begin with the letter Q are provided by IBM, they typically contain user data that changes frequently. Therefore, these libraries are also considered user libraries. You can choose individual IBM User Libraries for backup directly. The entire contents of the selected IBM User Library (or libraries) will be backed up.
• If you want to backup all the IBM User Libraries from the System i server, select the object IBM User Libraries and click Add.
• To backup the system directory files, you must stop the QSNADS subsystem before saving the QUSRSYS library.
• To backup the system performance data you must stop the performance monitor before saving the QPFRDATA library.
NOTE: “IBM User Libraries” cannot be backed up as individual objects.
Libraries
You can choose individual libraries for backup directly. The entire contents of the selected library (or libraries) will be backed up.
• If you want to back up all libraries of your system, select Libraries and click Add.
NOTE: The "Selected Items for Backup" list cannot contain applications and libraries at the same time.
System info
You can backup the entire system info at once, or select one of the following:
• User Profiles - the user profiles of your System i Server
• Configuration - the configuration, which consists of:
• Line descriptions
• Controller descriptions
• Device descriptions
• Mode descriptions
• Class of service descriptions
• Network interface descriptions
• Network server descriptions
• NetBIOS descriptions
• Connection lists
• Configuration lists
• Hardware resource data
• Token ring adapter data
Backup of files, members and objects
• Add all the required items to the Selected Items for Backup list in any of the following ways:
• To backup individual files, expand a library and Add the file(s).
• To backup a member, select the file, and click Objects. In the window that appears, select a member and click Add.
• To backup other objects from a library, e.g. programs or data areas, select the library containing the required and click Objects. In the window that appears, select the required objects and click Add.
• If you want to remove an item, use the "Remove" button.
• To quickly restore individual objects, select Individual obj before you click Add.
NOTE: This option will reduce the backup speed and increase the disk space required. The performance is also affected if the libraries contain a large number of small objects.) The icon for "individual objects" contains an additional blue "+" sign.
