Restoring Microsoft SQL Server data to an alternate location
Restoring a Microsoft SQL Server backup set to an alternate location involves specifying the alternate server's location and specifying the path at the new location.
The following steps are applicable for restoring databases.
1. In the Restore Now Wizard, perform all necessary steps to specify the items to restore.
2. In the Select Restore Location screen, select Alternate Location.
The Alternate location options become available.
• To restore to a different directory on the same server, proceed to step 4.
• To restore to a different server on the network, proceed to step 3.
3. Select the destination location for the restore:
a) Click >> beside the Location field.
The Alternate Database Server Wizard screen appears, displaying available servers on the network.
b) Browse, select the server to which you want to restore the backed up database, and click Select.
If Ask for Network Credentials is selected, the Enter Network Credentials screen appears.
If Ask for Database Credentials is selected, the Enter Database Credentials screen appears.
d) (If applicable) In the Enter Database Credentials screen, provide the database credentials, and click OK.
If the credentials are valid, the Select Restore Location screen re-appears, displaying the alternate server as the location.
4. Select the location for the database dump. Click >> beside the Dump to field to open the Select Share & Path for the Database Dump screen.
5. Browse, select the computer and path for the database dump, and click Select.
NOTE: You can select the DS-Client Buffer as an option for the database dump if none of your shares has sufficient capacity. This will save the dump to the local storage on the DS-Client computer.
NOTE: When restoring to a different location, you must re-specify the Destination Database for each item.
6. To re-specify the Destination Database for each item, double-click the Destination cell beside the source name.
The spreadsheet table contains the list of database specified for the restore and default restore information:
Source | This cell shows the title of the database (or database\table name in the case of tables). |
Destination Database | This cell shows the destination database to which the backup set will be restored. |
7. In the Restore Options section, select any options that you require, and click Next to proceed to subsequent screens:
Restore only the dump file(s) | Restores the dump files but does not load them as databases. This option is not available for DS-Client Pipe. |
Restore Path | When restoring to an alternate location, you can specify the path for the log and data files separately. When you click this button, the Select Restore Path screen appears. |
Preserve original database file location | This option only applies to restores to the original location. By default, this check box is not selected. The restored files will be placed on the default path(s) of the target instance. When this check box is selected, restored files will be placed in their original path(s). If the original path(s) do not exist, the restore will fail. |
The following provides information on subsequent screens:
8. In the Select Restore Reason screen, click Finish to start the restore.
The Restore Process screen appears, showing the progress of each file being restored.
