Resolving port conflicts for the DS-Client software
Creation Date: October 18, 2005
Revision Date: October 18, 2005
Product: DS‑Client installed on Windows operating systems
Summary
For normal operation, DS-Client needs to open the port 4403 (or 3002 for versions older than v.6.0) for the TCP/UDP protocols on the machine where it is installed. If this fails, the DS-Client service will stop and will record the following error in the Windows Application Log: "Failed to open ports (ds-user,TCP)."
DS-Client might fail to start on some Windows operating systems because of a port conflict between DS-Client and some Microsoft services like WMI. Following is a workaround provided by Microsoft to resolve port conflicts:
1. Run "RegEdit".
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters
3. Double click the key named ReservedPorts and add 4403-4403 (or 3002-3002 for DS-Clients earlier to v.6.0).
4. Ensure that the key value ends with one empty line by hitting the "Enter" key.
5. Click OK to save the Registry changes.
6. Restart Windows.
