Recovering orphaned backup sets
Creation Date: March 18, 1999
Revision Date: December 02, 2015
Product: DS‑Client
Summary
If you encounter the following Event Log error: Backup Set not found in Backup Log, it means the Admin process encountered differences when it checked the DS‑Client's database against the actual backup data on the DS‑System. This means the backup data exists on the DS‑System, but the backup set is missing from the DS‑Client's database.
These 'orphaned' backup sets can still be recovered by having the DS‑Client reconstruct the backup set catalogs from the DS‑System information. Orphaned backup sets must be recovered individually.
However, recovering an orphaned backup set does not recover its configuration information (i.e. Computer Name, Connect As, Backup Schedule...). This information must be re‑specified to the DS‑Client database by performing the Migration process.
Recover orphaned backup sets
When recovering an orphaned backup set, your current login credentials are used to assume ownership of the backup set. This means your current login ID will be the owner of the recovered set.
NOTE:  Microsoft Office 365 backup sets will be displayed under a blank server name in the selection tree, because backup sets in Office 365 use domain names for sorting. These domain names form a part of the credentials which are not configured for orphaned sets. These credentials are supplied during the migration process. Office 365 orphaned sets that have not yet gone through migration, will be listed under a blank server name in the Backup Sets section of the main DS-User dialog.
Follow these steps to recover each orphaned backup set individually:
1. From the Setup menu, select System Activities > Repair.
The Repair DS‑Client dialog box appears.
2. Select Orphaned backup sets and click OK.
The Backup Set Recovery dialog box appears.
3. Select the orphaned backup set that you want to recover and click Recover. You may be prompted to click Set Info and to provide information on the orphaned backup set to be recovered.
Synchronization begins. The recovery process is complete when the backup set is synchronized with DS-System online storage.
You may repeat the above steps to recover all remaining orphaned backup sets.
Once a backup set is recovered, you can perform restores immediately. To perform backups for a recovered backup set, you first need to migrate the backup set; see the following section on how to migrate a backup set.
Migration
To resume backups, you must re‑specify some of the backup set's configuration information (i.e. Network Provider, Computer Name, Connect As, Backup Items, and Backup Schedule information). Do this by migrating or by manually changing the required settings.
The easiest method is to migrate the backup set:
1. From the Backup Sets Tab, click on a set to highlight it.
2. Right‑click to display the options menu.
3. Click Migrate.
The Migrate Backup Set Wizard appears, prompting you to select the new network/share path.
4. Browse through the network/node to specify the new path you want to migrate this backup set.
5. To specify the credentials to the new network resource, select Ask for Network Credentials. In the Enter Network Credentials dialog box, enter the User name, source server (if applicable), and password to connect with the selected network/node.
6. Once connected to the new network/node, the match the source/destination share screen appears.
7. Double Click the corresponding Destination Cell to show all the available shares on the selected node.
8. Select the share where the files have been moved and click Next.
The specified backup items in the Selected Files for Backup Section will remain; however, the share path will change according to the destination share selected in the previous tab.
9. Make sure that the path of the migrated files is correct.
Otherwise, errors will occur. You can add more files, or leave this dialog unchanged.
10. Click Next, when you are finished changing/specifying backup items. The Backup Item Options screen appears.
11. Select the required options. Depending on which network you have migrated to, you may see more or less backup options than previously available for this backup set.
12. Click Finish to complete the migration.
The Backup Sets dialog box returns. If you open the migrated backup set, you will see the changes made to the network, node, and/or provider.
