DS-Client Service Account
Creation Date: May 3, 1997
Revision Date: September 22, 2009
Product: DS‑Client (Windows)
Summary
The DS‑Client software runs as a service on a Windows computer and requires a user account to login (to allow access to network resources). This account is to be provided during the DS‑Client installation process (make sure that this user account exists on the target Windows machine).
Before starting the DS‑Client installation program, log in to the DS‑Client computer as the administrator or other user with equivalent permissions.
Service account rights
The Service Account requires some advanced user rights. Therefore, the DS‑Client installation program grants the following rights to the DS‑Client Service Account:
"Act as part of the operating system"
"Log on as a service"
"Back up files and directories"
"Restore files and directories"
How the DS‑Client uses the service account
The DS‑Client installation/configuration programs store the user name and password for the DS‑Client Service Account in the Registry (in encrypted form). The DS‑Client service uses this user account for login impersonation during backup/restore sessions that are not configured with a user account having permissions to perform login impersonation (e.g. connection to a non‑Windows computer). This (login impersonation) allows the DS‑Client to perform simultaneous backup/restore operations from/to the same server with different user credentials.
Changing and maintaining the service account
To provide uninterrupted service, ensure that (1) the Service Account is not disabled and (2) the password never expires. For information on how to configure the service account, see Microsoft documentation.
