BOC 90

90th Anniversary of the ASCP Board of Certification

On June 8, 2018, the ASCP Board of Certification will celebrate its 90th anniversary. From its beginning as the ASCP Committee on Registration of Laboratory Technicians until today, many changes have taken place in laboratory medicine and in the recognition of medical laboratory professionals. A brief overview is provided for your information. Look for more on the BOC history during the year!

ASCP BOC Practice Analysis and the ASCLS Entry Level Curriculum

A paper written in collaboration with ASCLS and the ASCP Board of Certification titled, Purpose and Methodology of the ASCLS Entry Level Curriculum and the ASCP BOC Practice Analysis, is now available that describes both of these processes and identifies the purpose of each.

Access to Program Performance Reports (PPR) for Faculty

We have listened to your feedback and are now able to add multiple users from an institution to access PPR data for your program. If there is someone other than the Program Director who should also have access to the PPR information, please email PDInfo@ascp.org with the name of the institution, school code, and name and email address of individuals who should be added. Please note that the Program Director will remain the only person able to access the EEV (Exam Eligibility Verification) to verify students' completion of the program.

July 2018 BOC Procedures for Examination and Certification Available in July

This revised booklet will be available in early July 2018. The eligibility requirements have been reformatted with bullet points for easier reading.

HRSA Announces 2018 Faculty Loan Repayment Program

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) just announced its 2018 Faculty Loan Repayment Program, and it is accepting applications through June 28. The Faculty Loan Repayment Program provides individuals who have an interest in eligible health profession careers, such as medical laboratory science, with financial support to help pay off outstanding educational loans by serving as faculty members at accredited and eligible health professions schools. Participants will receive up to $40,000 for two (2) years of service to repay the outstanding principal and interest of qualifying educational loans.

Applicants must obtain all qualifying educational loans prior to the application deadline of June 28, 2018. ASCP encourages interested individuals to apply as soon as possible. To be eligible, all applicants must: (1) come from a disadvantaged background, based on environmental and/or economic factors, (2) have an eligible health professions degree or certificate, and (3) have an employment commitment as a faculty member at an approved health professions institution for a minimum of two years. HRSA will be hosting a Faculty Loan Repayment Program Technical Assistance Call on Thursday, June 7 from 3-4:30 p.m. ET. Dial-in: 1-888-889-4957 Passcode: 9769247. Apply Here.

New Study Guides Available

A new study guide for phlebotomy, BOC Study Guide: Phlebotomy Certification Examinations, is now available for Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) and Donor Phlebotomy Technician (DPT) examinations.

A new study guide for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), BOC Study Guide: Clinical Laboratory Certification Examinations, 6th Edition, is also available.

Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) Certificates Discontinued

Beginning July 1, 2018, the ASCP Board of Certification will no longer issue CMP wall certificates every three years upon completion of the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). In its place, the BOC will be issuing access to an electronic renewal letter. This will allow certificants faster notification of successful completion of the CMP with the ability to print notification results.

The elimination of CMP wall certificate is due in part to the steady increase in the number of BOC wall certificates being used fraudulently. And, after reviewing the recertification procedure for a number of professional certification bodies, we found that providing a notification of recertification rather than a wall certificate is standard practice.

Upon successful completion of initial BOC certification, examinees will receive a wall certificate indicating their certification by the ASCP Board of Certification. These wall certificates should be safeguarded. They should not be photographed or posted on social media. Instances of fraud have been traced back to individuals who posted their BOC certificate and other personal documents (i.e., college transcripts) on social media. Unfortunately, individuals who post this type of personal information are at risk for identity theft as well as providing an opportunity for others to commit certification fraud.

Please note, the only way to definitively verify ASCP certification is through primary source verification.

Examination Eligibility Verification (EEV) Report – Important Information for Summer Break*

Please remember to check your email for announcements of Examination Eligibility Verification Reports to review over the summer. You may log in to your account anywhere in the world where you have access to the Internet. Your students will not be able to schedule appointments to take the examination until you sign off on these reports.

Important - Program Changes

Please be sure to notify the BOC office if any of your program information changes, such as your email address, program status, program director, or mailing address. Please notify Kristin Blake at kristin.blake@ascp.org. For program directors from international countries for ASCPi certification, please notify Angela Sreckovic at Angela.Sreckovic@ascp.org.

Important Information for Students in California and New York

Please ensure that your students become certified and complete the examination for licensure by applying for Certification and Licensure on the online application. If students apply for licensure only, they will be required to reapply for certification and take the certification examination. By applying for and taking the certification examination, their examination scores are acceptable for licensure in California and New York. All other state licensure requirements must be met to obtain state licensure. For additional information, see the CA and NY NAACLS student information form.
