April 2017

National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week on April 23-29 *

Thank you for the vital role you play in preparing students for a career as a medical laboratory professional!

Lab Week is your chance to let others know about careers in the medical laboratory field. Use this opportunity to visit or share information with students in local middle schools and high schools. Connect with your clinical sites to share information and ideas. If they are offering laboratory tours, you may wish to organize a tour for a school science class. You may offer to teach a science teacher in-service on blood typing or microorganisms, or go into the classroom with some fascinating specimens to encourage students to consider laboratory careers.

Clinical Laboratory Educators' Conference (CLEC) BOC Presentation Available

If you were unable to attend CLEC or would like a copy of the presentation given by BOC speakers Susan Beck, PhD, MLS(ASCP)CM, Karen Brown, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, and Patricia Tanabe, MPA, MLS(ASCP)CM, please visit A Closer Look at the BOC: An Overview for New Program Directors and Faculty.

Sub-content Area Scores for MLS and MLT Program Performance Reports*

As of Jan. 1, 2017, only the scaled scores in the main content areas (e.g., Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, etc.) are being reported for MLS and MLT. Please visit Sub-content Area Revision for a complete explanation.

Purchase Orders for Online Practice Tests No Longer Accepted

Effective April 3, 2017, the ASCP Board of Certification will no longer accept purchase orders for bulk purchases of the online practice tests. The use of purchase orders does not allow orders and payments to be handled in a timely manner. You may continue to make bulk purchases by credit card or check.

Display of Certificates on Social Media

Please remind your students not to display their ASCP Board of Certification certificates on social media. Images of certificates can be used by unscrupulous individuals to copy the certificate and change the name to their own. This copy is then used to obtain employment. To maintain the value of ASCP BOC certification and, most importantly, for patient safety and welfare, it is important for individuals to protect their certificates from misuse.

List of International Certificants

Starting summer 2017 International certificants will no longer be listed in the International Certification Newsletter. They will be listed quarterly on the BOC website and ONELab.

The ONELab International Group is Now Live!

The ASCP BOC International Group is a new online group open to anyone interested in ASCP BOC international certifications. Medical laboratory students, professionals, program directors, and others are encouraged to interact with our knowledgeable volunteers and staff who have years of experience in advising international certification applicants. Whether it's MLS, MLT, CTgyn, MB, PBT, or any other of the BOC's 18 international certifications, this group can answer your certification related questions.

To make this group beneficial and useful, we need you to participate by asking questions, posting responses, and sharing your certification experiences! Click here to login and get started.

Important - Program Changes

Please be sure to notify the BOC office if any of your program information changes, such as your email address, program status, program director, or mailing address. Please notify Kristin Blake at kristin.blake@ascp.org. For program directors from international countries for ASCPi certification, please notify Angela Sreckovic at Angela.Sreckovic@ascp.org

Reminder: 2017 Program Performance Reports (PPR) Payment Now Due*

Invoices for the 2017 Program Performance Report (PPR) were made available to all program directors of NAACLS, CAAHEP, and ABHES accredited/approved program as well as BOC approved structured phlebotomy training programs in October 2016.

If you choose not to pay for 2017, you will no longer have access to the PPRs from the previous years. Please email Kristin Blake at kristin.blake@ascp.org if you have any questions.

Completing Applications and Examination Eligibility Verification (EEV) Report*

Before applying for certification, please ensure that your students have the correct name of your program so that they choose the right name from the drop-down menu on the application. This will ensure that your students appear on the correct EEV Report. Before signing the EEV, be sure to check the program category as well (e.g., Medical Laboratory Scientist vs. Medical Laboratory Technician).

The field on the Examination Eligibility Verification (EEV) Report titled "Program End Date" reflects the actual date of program completion as indicated by the student when they complete the online application form. Please ensure that your students are informed of the correct program end date to enter on the online application. This will affect your 2017 PPRs if you choose "Program Date."

Important Information for Students in California and New York

Please ensure that your students become certified and complete the examination for licensure by applying for Certification and Licensure on the online application. If students apply for licensure only, they will be required to reapply for certification and take the certification examination. By applying for and taking the certification examination, their examination scores are acceptable for licensure in California and New York. All other state licensure requirements must be met to obtain state licensure. For additional information, see the CA and NY NAACLS student information form.

Do You Have Students Missing From Your PPR or EEV Reports?*

When your students complete the online application, please remind them to use the drop-down list of programs to select the program they completed. When students enter the name manually, the school is not recognized, and these students' names will not appear on your PPR or EEV reports. If your program is not listed, please let us know immediately by contacting Kristin Blake at kristin.blake@ascp.org.
