Welcome to Francis Scott Key Elementary School

Key School is named after Francis Scott Key (1790-1843), author of our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Key School or Escuela Key was one of the pioneers in two-way immersion programs. The immersion program was established at Key School in 1986 with a first grade class, and one grade was added each year as the initial cohort advanced. Kindergarten was added in 1991.

Sra. Fernandez to retire at end of year
We are all very, very sad to announce the retirement of our beloved Assistant Principal, Sra. Evelyn Fernandez.  Sra. Fernandez has been with us at Key for over 25 years.  She worked many years as a classroom teacher before moving up to become Dr. Myers' right hand.  Escuela Key and our community owe her a great debt.  She has proven over and over again her commitment to the education and success of our students.  She motivates, she cajoles, she teaches, she inspires, she succeeds... THANK YOU, SRA. FERNANDEZ!  We love you, we will miss you...

To prepare for SY 16.17 the superintendent of Arlington Public Schools, Dr. Patrick Murphy, has requested that all students be given the opportunity to take their iPad Personalized Devices home for the summer.  This gives our students a chance to participate in 24/7 learning.

All students will be given their iPad and a charger to take home on the last day of school- Friday, June 24.  Any student that is not present that day will have his iPad available for pick up over the summer in the Key School office.  It is the responsibility of the parent to call the school office in advance and make arrangements to pick up the device.

Please use the electronic form linked below to let us know of your intentions.  You may indicate that you will take home the device or "opt out".

Thank you,
Dr. Marjorie Myers                                     Paul Maniscalco

APS Reading Specialist Awarded International Literacy Scholarship Award
KD award

Kathy Davin, reading specialist at Key Elementary, earned the Virginia State Reading International Literacy Scholarship for her work in Guatemala. Beginning in 2011, the Greater Washington Reading Council (GWRC) began to cosponsor a literacy project in the rural highlands of Guatemala.  Davin served as the project leader. The council provides partial funding for the purchase of materials for guided reading instruction and recruitment of members to join a group of educators every July for a week of on-site teacher training in best practices for literacy instruction.  The focus is on first language literacy and vocabulary development in the second language. The US teachers spend the mornings observing and coaching in the classrooms and the afternoons conducting workshops and helping local teachers plan instruction.  Fluency in Spanish is desirable but not required. Davin will share the groups’ experiences and insights at the VSRA Conference in 2016.

      TEAM KIDSSY 2015.16
Empowering America's Future
Key School has accepted the challenge again for SY 15.16!  We are empowering kids to make a difference in the community and their own lives.  Working with parents, teachers, police officers, firefighters and members of the community, our kids will make that difference by focusing on the positive assets of youth to serve their community.  We will meet our three challenges and celebrate at our festival this October.  Let us know if YOU would like to volunteer.
