The Book Buddies Program is a one on one tutoring program designed as an intervention for students who may need additional support to learn to read. The Program was developed by the University of Virginia and Charlottesville City Schools. It has been used in several Arlington Schools successfully for the past several years. Volunteers make a commitment of one or two hours per week from October through May (1 hour, 2 times a week - which may be split between two volunteers, each volunteer taking one day). The hour session includes a 45 minute lesson with 1 student and 15 minutes of preparation/reflection. The volunteer follows a specific lesson plan that is written by the Book Buddies coordinator. The lesson includes listening to the student read familiar books, working on sight words and spelling patterns through sorts and games, writing an original sentence (or sentences) and introducing/reading a new book with the student. The site coordinator provides initial training and ongoing guidance throughout the year.
At Hoffman-Boston, the tutors meet with their students on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 - 9:15, coverage is available for absences when necessary.
