English Language Arts Department / Artes del Lenguaje en Inglés

The main goal of the English Language Arts program is to teach students English language literacy skills. These skills are primarily expressed in the ability to effectively read, write, listen and speak.

My goals are to help children become successful and motivated readers and writers. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Wake Forest University and a master's degree and a doctorate in education from the University of Maryland, College Park. I love reading mysteries, biographies, and funny stories. A few of my favorite children's authors are Patricia Polacco, Beverly Cleary, and Mildred Taylor..

I earned my degree in general and special education from Providence College, and then went on to earn my masters in curriculum and instruction, with a focus on reading instruction, from Boston College. I am currently working towards my doctorate degree in bilingual special education from The George Washington University. I began my teaching career in Boston, MA working as a 4th grade teacher, and then went onto teach special education in grades K – 6. My husband and I relocated to Arlington six years ago, at which time I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to join the Claremont family. This will be my 14th year teaching, and I am thrilled to spend another year watching our students grow and learn both socially and academically. When I am not teaching, I am usually in a coffee shop studying about teaching! In any rare free time that I do get, I love to go for runs, cook, spend time with family and friends, and play with my dog Kiley.

I graduated from the College of Charleston in South Carolina and the University of Virginia. My love of reading began as a young girl when I spent many hours reading all kinds of books, especially ones about horses! In addition to reading, I enjoy gardening, visiting interesting places around Washington, DC, and playing with my two spoiled cats!

I have taught at Claremont since it opened, and I'm thrilled to be a part of the reading team! I've studied at many universities in Virginia, including the University of Mary Washington and the University of Virginia. I have a wonderful husband and two sweet sons, Spencer and Finn. We love to go hiking, visit museums, and, of course, READ.
