Routing dadoes--grooves across the grain--poses several challenges, especially on narrow stock. For really small pieces, we prefer to hold the workpiece with a miniature clamp, or even secure the workpiece to the end of another piece of wood with double-faced tape or hot-melt glue. Push the hardboard sliding tabletop into the bit, and cut a slot about halfway across the hardboard. Mark the hole location needed for your largest rotary bit, remove the table, and drill the hole. Believe it or not makeing your own router table can get expensive and very time consuming once you know what you want. My first table took a couple of hours to make, and it served me well for a couple of years.

Then you still need to build a stand, buy some miter track if you want to use a miter gauge or another place for a feather board, If your looking for cheap I would like to suggest you try to find a used Craftsman router table, they are about a dime a dozen and do the job.
To rout dadoes, hold the workpiece firmly against the fence and slowly slide the tabletop across the bit. Securing the workpiece, spacing the dadoes, and guiding the router straight over the stock become even more difficult on small workpieces. When I had time a couple of years later, I used all the same ideas , but enclosed the router to quiet it down, added dust collection, and filled the table with drawers to hold everything needed, and use all available space to the best use possible.
I picked a router table top that came with miter track, fence and aluminum mounting plate for the router.
American Woodworker magazine was acquired by F+W Media (parent company of Popular Woodworking) in 2014. WOOD Magazine's Jim Heavey shows you how to squeeze the maximum potential out of your router table with 5 useful tips and techniques.

One other option is their are alot of good prebuilt tables that will get you up and running in no time. Small pieces often require precise routing that just isn't safe on a full-size router table. Clamp the mini table to your workbench as shown in the photo, or slide one of the protruding ends of the back into a flush-mounted bench vise.
