What woodturner can drive by a downed tree without thinking, "Hmmm, turning stock!" In this article, you'll learn how to cut up and preserve such finds for bowl blanks. There you can see my work, buy great gifts, and find lots more information about woodturning, including pages on tool sharpening, bowl troubleshooting, finishing methods and more.
Here is a new technique just added to this (you can tell because it is a different piece of wood being turned here). But the shape of the fluteless gouge puts the shaft nearly perpendicular to the wood surface, reducing any tendency to vibration. December 11, 2013 by Mike 2 Comments Today I’ll show you how I process a log for making bowl blanks.
This way, if you find any checking after sealing and storing the blank, you'll have ample stock to trim from both ends, exposing check-free surfaces.
The suction falls off very rapidly with distance, and has to compete with air movement caused by the spinning wood or sander. The post has a projecting arm at about the height of the lathe spindle, at the end of which is a wooden cradle to support the hose, which hangs down from above. Although the grinding angle is obtuse, the wood coming onto the slicing edge sees it as very sharp. If you are harvesting your own wood, I offer a pictorial sequence titled Sawing a Log for Bowl Blanks here on my website. Special blanks such as wormey wood, bark inclusions, extra deep, or hollow form vessels are priced on request and availibility.
The Titan handled them easily, turning at about 1500 rpm and making large amounts of curly shavings.
Now the ultimate wood for turning at Highland Woodworking is outside in the enclosed space next to their parking lot, and you have to go to the store to shop for these also.
We supply leading brands like Robert Sorby, Creusen, Tormek, Chestnut and Titebond, and a comprehensive range of items for the modern woodturner. The freshly cut surface looks much better and is solid enough if I get the wood on the lathe soon.

Hold the template steady with one hand and trace around the edge with the pen and mark the center as this will be important when you mount the blank on a faceplate.
Here is the trimmed blank ready for mounting on a face plate or mounting between centers to get the proper level of the ends and sides of the bowl so that a new face can be turned for mounting the face plate. Every bolt of wood cut from a trunk or large limb should yield two bowl blanks and a heart slab with two halves which are quarter sawn.
It always makes me feel good to know that I have saved wood from the trash or fireplace and turned it into something useful or beautiful or, hopefully, both.
While experienced turners use features such as knots and eccentric growth rings of branches to great advantage, those features can cause blanks and finished turnings to crack or warp excessively. Leave the logs in long yet manageable lengths until you are ready to cut them into turning blanks. Alternatively, it can be boiled, frozen, soaked in soap, or any other of the arcane methods people have used to allegedly dry wood.
This limits potential checking (and waste) to just the two ends of the log rather than both ends of multiple blank-length sections. This is so that I can begin to remove the corner of the blank and begin the curve of the outside of the bowl.
You have to drop by the store and browse through the blanks in stock to find the ones you want to buy. With our years of experience and passion in both woodturning and woodworking we are committed to providing a friendly and professional service and with the adage of offering great value too. CBN (cubic boron nitride) grinding wheels are said to have advantages for grinding woodturning tools.
It was suggested to me that once the bowl blank is gripped by the tenon that a second tenon be turned on the top of the blank. Since I am the proud owner of a Kel McNaughton coring tool, I do not have to turn the center into chips, but rather a smaller bowl.
So when selecting wood for turning blanks, avoid limb wood and look instead for trunk logs with minimal knots.

If they are wide, the points are easy to keep clear of the wood, so the risk of catches is minimal. A wooden post is held upright by standing it in a bucket of loose gravel on the floor behind the headstock.
The sturdy tool rest and firm grip on the blank seems to eliminate vibration and made the cutting effortless. What this technique does is make a mark letting you know where the waste wood ends and the bowl rim begins, and allows for quick and relatively easy removal of the waste once the bowl is flipped.
I did that by holding the steel bushes in my woodturning chuck and skimming them very lightly with a graver.
There are several steps that need to be accomplished before one gets the wood onto the lathe.
I think long jaws with a parallel grip are best for the job as they give good support to the wood. To rough a bowl with the best results and the most pleasure, it is essential to start at the bottom of the blank using a bowl gouge.
The bowl is flipped, gripped with a chuck, and the waste on the top is turned away so that a flat surface remains. When chainsawing a log section lengthwise to form bowl blanks, lay the log on its side, and support it to prevent rolling. Its cutting action is like that of a traditionally ground bowl gouge, with the wing close to the wood surface.
