19.08.2015
In this 12-day intensive course, you will learn chest construction, from dovetailing large carcasses to frame and panel construction, as you make a four-drawer dresser from walnut or cherry. Our programs prepare our students to open their own woodworking business or become employed by a high-end woodworking related business. Fifty-Plus Years of Excellence 1956-present with an annual enrollment of 2,000 students in over 50 different classes, the Palomar College Cabinet and Furniture Technology program offers the most comprehensive woodworking career curriculum in the nation.
We ask that our students be dedicated to mastering the technical skills of traditional and contemporary fine woodworking.
Cabinet & Furniture Technology Program at Palomar would like you to come and see our Brand New Facility built in the Fall of 2013.
We have 4 newly expanded Classrooms, 3 state of the art labs with over $275,000 of new machinery, and $600,000 spent on new exhaust and compressed air systems. Our community’s woodworkers will teach you how to employ centuries-old skills to produce custom furniture that will last for generations.
Even novices will learn the complete craft of steam bent wood, hand-carved details and hand-cut joinery for solid wood construction in an amazingly short period of time. In our advanced furniture-making courses, you can learn to make blanket chests, wall clocks, chairs, rocking chairs keepsake boxes, dressers and tables.

One of the most rewarding woodworking projects you could embark on is making the tools that you will use in your everyday work to build furniture with. We have designed these classes for those who can’t take a lot of time away, but still would like to learn a special aspect in woodworking, from carving to inlay to just honing your skills in joinery such as dovetailing.
Come learn the art of turning on a lathe, as we simplify the process and show you how to get started in your own shop, turning scrap wood into useful and decorative items.
You will learn how to lay out and cut angled tenons, and how to apply leather upholstery for the seat. Skills that you will practice in the class include cutting dovetails by hand, mortise-and-tenon frame construction and use of a plow plane. The Palomar School Schedule lists the current semester's classes and when available in the Spring 2015 School Schedule.
Utilizing three fully-equipped shops, our 2 full-time and 25 part-time instructors provide a breadth of courses and depth of expertise impossible to obtain in smaller programs. Their award-winning workmanship is sold throughout North America, featured in fine woodworking magazines and has been selected for the permanent collection of the U.S. Even advanced craftsmen can develop and hone their skills through our unique courses taught in a congenial, rural setting.

You’ll learn to sharpen your planes, saws and chisels and how to hand cut dovetails joints, dados and mortise-and-tenons—the primary joints through which traditional wood furniture is joined together. When you invest time and care into crafting and shaping a tool just for the job, there is a bond that is formed between you and your tools.
In these classes, you’ll use hand tools and traditional joinery to make a dovetailed box, a wall shelf and a small, occasional table. Our courses range from Furniture Design to Timber Framing, and from Guitar building to Production Cabinetmaking. We have new course offerings such as our Computer Design Sketch-up Class and 8 new Certificate Programs you can choose from.
