In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. 
It may seem to us at times that Jesus is asleep in our lives, but our Lord is always with us. This is where the disciples lost sight of who was with them in the boat. They became fearful and worried and anxious because the boat was being swamped by the waves, and yet they forgot who was with them, the Master of life, the Savior, the Messiah. He rebuked them and said, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?" 
So we can apply this in our own life when we go through trials in our own life, difficulties, whatever it may be, whatever we may face, or what's going on around us, the storms that are around us in the world. Jesus says to us, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?" Jesus is with us no matter what we go through in life. He's always at our side and always in our presence. Of course, we have the privilege of having Him in our presence in the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament, to be with Him, to be filled with His consolation and strength, and to be renewed to go out into the world to follow Him. It is a reminder for us that Jesus is reminding us that even though it may seem He's quiet in our life, He is with us. There's never a moment that Jesus is not at our side, not with us to help us and to guide us. 
Today we honor one of the great Franciscan missionaries in the Church, St. Junipero Serra, who was born in Mallorca, Spain, and who would eventually travel to Mexico and then would found the missions along the California coast. Father Junipero Serra founded nine missions in California, and it's said in his lifetime, he walked over 24,000 miles. It was very painful, actually, for him to walk, records show, because he had sickness in his feet, either from an insect bite or from varicose veins, but it was very difficult for him to walk, but yet, it did not break his spirit in founding the missions and taking care of the missions. These missions were from San Diego all the way up the coast to San Francisco. He would try to space the missions within a day's journey, so each of the missions were able to be reached within a day's journey's walk. Many of our famous cities on the California coast are still named after these missions he founded, San Diego, San Clemente, San Gabriel, and, of course, San Francisco and the others.
Father Junipero Serra even had to walk all the way back to Mexico City in order to plead with the government and to send word back to the king in Spain, for he was a great defender of the Indians and tried to prevent the Spanish from abusing them. Contrary to what many modern historians say, he defended the Indians and sought their protection from being abused by the Spanish, and would send word to the king in Spain, who would give him the authority and control over the missions and so forth. One of his famous quotes was, "Always forwards, never backwards," he reminds us that in our walk with Christ we must always go forwards, never backwards. He is buried in the mission of St. Charles Borromeo, which is near Carmel, California. I had the very great privilege to visit this mission, and his body is in the sanctuary under the floor. I had the privilege to visit this mission and to pray at his tomb.
What we can ask Father Junipero Serra is for his zeal, his untiring zeal for Christ, even in the midst of hardships, in the midst of difficulties. He never gave up in his work, in his mission for Christ, and his courage and his trust. So the theme today reminds us, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?" We must always remember in our life that Jesus is with us, no matter what we face, no matter what God calls us to do to help us in loving Him and serving Him.
