In yesterday's Gospel, we heard our Lord say that He is the resurrection and the life. Today, instead, our Lord says that He is the light of the world. Yesterday, the resurrection and the life refers to grace, the life of God in the soul, which makes us partakers of the divine nature. And the light of the world refers to the truth that our Lord teaches us, the truth that enlightens our minds. And this is why St. John, in his Gospel, says that In the Pharisees, they don't accept our Lord's testimony. It says, The Pharisees, who are living in darkness and error and sin, don't accept our Lord's testimony, He who is the truth. They see according to human appearances. That is, they see our Lord's human nature, but they aren't able to see His divine nature, because that requires faith. Our Lord then assures us that His testimony is true, since He is the light of the world. He, being the truth, cannot lie. He can neither deceive nor be deceived. Our Lord said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. And so everything our Lord says is true. But He also refers to the condition that the Jews pose in order to verify a person's testimony. He says, As in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true. I am one that giveth testimony of myself, and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me. So there was also the testimony of the Father. Here our Lord refers to His baptism. When the voice of the Father was heard, saying, Behold my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. The same voice was heard as well, at the transfiguration. Although the transfiguration was a privilege only of the three chosen apostles to be witness of. And so today we recognize our Lord as our light and our truth, and we renew our faith in all that Holy Mother Church proposes for our belief that we may walk according to the truth and live holy lives. Amen. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
