As we just read in the Gospel, our Lord said,
Everyone that had left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children
or lands for my name's sake shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess life everlasting.
These words can certainly be applied to the saint we celebrate today,
the saint on the old calendar, St. Romwald, who at the age of 20 forsook all things to follow Christ
and to follow Christ more closely by means of the religious vows, the evangelical councils,
of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
Actually, St. Romwald had initially intended to only spend 40 days at the Benedictine monastery
in order to do penance for a sinful duel in which his father was involved.
But while he was there, amidst the silence and solitude, he heard the voice of God calling him to leave the world,
heard the voice of God in his heart.
A holy inspiration to live only for God and for his eternal salvation.
After some time in desiring an even more austere life than the Benedictines were currently living in that monastery,
St. Romwald was traveling through Tuscany in central Italy,
and he had a vision of a ladder which reached from heaven to earth,
on which he saw monks clothed in white,
ascending and descending on a ladder.
In that location, which was the field known as Maldoli,
that is in Italian, Campo Maldoli,
he decided to build a monastery,
and the branch of Benedictines that he founded still bears that name, the Camaldolese.
St. Romwald is known for his battles and victories
over the assaults of the evil,
for his constant joy,
even amidst the great austerities which he lived,
and also for being a wise instructor of souls.
Today we entrust ourselves to his powerful intercession.
