Tollbooth
slayings

On Sunday at around 7 a.m., two tollbooth workers were shot and killed in Fort Littleton, Fulton County.

The slayings occurred during an attempted robbery of the Pennsylvania Turnpike tollbooth.

Incident begins

Clarence Briggs, 54, arrives at the toll station brandishing a weapon, and approaches two employees inside one of the tollbooths.

Captive

Briggs forces the two toll workers inside a nearby building where he attempts to tie them up. A struggle ensues.

Briggs flees

Briggs flees the building as a teller van arrives to collect the toll revenue. The two turnpike employees run to the tollbooth to call 911 and tell the van's occupants what occurred.

Two killed

Briggs is confronted by toll worker Danny Crouse and Ronald Heist, who was traveling in the collection van. Briggs shoots and kills both men.

Attempted getaway

Briggs takes the collection vehicle and drives a short distance away, where he transfers an undisclosed amount of money to his own car.

Police arrive

Within moments, responding troopers arrive and exchange gunfire with Briggs, who is himself killed.

Motive?

Briggs was a former Pennsylvania State trooper who retired in 2012. His motives for the robbery remain unclear.
