Rebuilding the beltway
Widening I-83 in the Harrisburg area has been discussed for decades.
Now, PennDOT is in the midst of a decade-plus $1 billion program to widen the highway.
Scroll ▼1. The York Split
Start year: 2013
Status: Completed
The first project in the larger plan to rebuild I-83 involved the reconfiguration of the York Split in Cumberland County.
2. I-283
Start year: 2014
Status: Completed
Before work could begin on I-83 in Dauphin County, PennDOT repaved I-283 south of the Eisenhower Interchange.
3. I-83 Overpasses
Start year: 2016
Status: In progress
Widening I-83 in Dauphin County, like any major road project, is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle.
Last year PennDOT began replacing the bridges that cross I-83 to make room for additional lanes of travel on the interstate
4. PA-283/The Turnpike
Start year: 2017
Status: Starting
A two-step project that begins this year. PennDOT plans to reconfigure the ramp from I-283 to the Pennsylvania Turnpike to remove the traffic 'weave' under the PA-283 bridge.
Once that is completed, the Pa-283 roadway will be reconstructed.
5. Widening I-83
Start year: 2018
Status: Future project
Once the bridges over I-83 are replaced in Lower Paxton Township, PennDOT will begin widening the highway from I-83 to past Union Deposite Road.
6. Eisenhower Interchange
Start year: 2022 (estimated)
Status: Future project
As work wraps up on widening the northern portion of I-83, PennDOT will tackle what will likely be one of the most difficult portions of the project: Rebuilding the Eisenhower Interchange.
7. Final portion
Start year: 2025 (estimated)
Status: Future project
Once the Eisenhower Interchange has been rebuilt the final portion of the project -- widening I-83 from the Susquehanna River out to 19th Street in Harrisburg, will begin.
