It should be noted that not all data elements described here are necessarily contained in a given file since this is a generic file description. Furthermore this file contains disaggregate and aggreagted data. 1 ---------------------------------------- DEFINITIONS OF COMMON FILE DATA ELEMENTS ---------------------------------------- o RECORD TYPE (3 characters): indicates the type of record.There are twelve types of records:REC(receipts),CON(consumption), STK(stocks),PRO(production-related),DRB(demonstrated reserve base), RES(recoverable reserves),DIS(distribution),IMP(imports),EXP (exports) and GNP(gross national product). o CONSUMER CODE (2 digits): represents consumer categories when coded 10,15,20-81,88 and data field content when coded 01-09,11,12,16-18, 85,90-99. Note: Appalacian = "APP" Interior = "INT" Western = "WES" - FIPS County code (3 characters) - District (2 characters) represents coal producing district: District 1 -23 = "25" Unknown = "88" Total = blanks o COAL RANK (3 characters): represents coal type. A = add D = delete C = change blanks = add o MOVEMENT CODE (2 digits) Consists of a primary shipment code: 1-Rail 2-River 3-Great Lake 4-Tidewater 5-Truck 6-Tram/Conveyor 7-Slurry pipeline 8-Unknown And a secondary shipment code: 1-Rail 2-Truck 3-River 4-Conveyer Belt 5-Other o Range Production Code (1 digit) represents the mines production as follows: 1-> 500,000 Tons 2-200,000-499,999 Tons 3-100,000-199,999 Tons 4- 50,000- 99,999 Tons 5- 10,000- 49,999 Tons o Market (1 digit) represents coal sold in the non captive (1) or coal produced for and consumed by the company operating the mine(2) Captive) o Custom District (2 digits) will be defined and used when Export/ import detail records are placed on the common file. o Count (5 digits) contains the number of occurances within an aggregated record. o SOURCE OF DATA CODE (4 characters) represents the source of the data which are stored in or used to update the record. All quantities are in short tons. Average prices are in dollars and and cents per short ton: i.e. format ABC.XY. Productivities are in short tons per hour or day: i.e. format ABC.XY. Bed thicknesses are in inches with format ABCD.XY.
