Students must meet criteria of Critical Elements to safely perform the skill based on evidence-based practice.  Score can be pass/fail, letter grade, or point assignment.  Only acceptable score for Critical Elements is 100%

Procedure

Prior to Treatment: (Critical Thinking)

Steps of the Procedure: (Patient Centered Care)

  1. Apply gloves.
  2. Place pad under work area.
  3. Place patient supine.
  4. Drape with covers as much as possible.
  5. Wash penis with soap and water, rinse and dry thoroughly.
  6. Wash hands and change gloves.
  7. Apply skin prep to penis and allow to dry.
  8. Hold penis in non-dominant hand.  With dominant hand, place the condom catheter at the end of the penis and slowly unroll it along the shaft toward patient’s body.  Leave 1-2 inches between the end of the penis and the drainage tube on the catheter.
  9. Secure the condom catheter in place.
  10. Secure the drainage tube to the patient’s thigh and place below the level of the bladder.
  11. Cover patient, remove gloves.
