I’m happy to discover I’m wrong. Really, I am. The only way to learn is by making mistakes. I think that on some level, in order to get out of bed in the morning and operate from day to day, all of us have to imagine that we know it all. How could any of us ever manage to do anything if we were constantly aware of the limits of our knowledge and understanding of things? When we are directly confronted with irrefutable personal error the vastness of the universe opens up. Even if it’s only for an instant it can be terrifying, even debilitating. However, it can also be exhilarating, that feeling of vertigo brought on by the discovery of error. Of course, one can only stand it for so long. Eventually an answer is required, even if only to get through the day. Whether or not the answer is correct is often beside the point. We all need something to hold onto. In a certain sense, learning is just moving on.
