MALACHI

Only son of Rudy and Karintha.  Has just graduated from high school.  His mother disappeared when he was in Kindergarten and his relationship with his father has been and continues to be intense, tumultuous and consuming.  Malachi is possessed of an inward turning, isolative personality, most probably as a result of the nature of his relationship with his father.  Shortly after graduating, overwhelmed by emotions that he feared were capable of spinning his life out of control, the foremost of which was anger at his father for what he saw as his father's decision to place his duties as Fairvale's chief religious and spiritual authority over his duties as a father and, blaming his father too for the loss of his mother, as a husband as well-- in an effort to regain his composure, Malachi broke with his father over this issue of total commitment to religion, and has, for the time being, abandoned his faith.  Malachi's mood is complex and turbulent and laced with diffidence.

At this time he is plunging more deeply into his relationship with Sula, and while exploring his feelings for her has become aware that they are comingled with his still painful feelings of loss surrounding the memory of his mother's disappearance.

Despite, or perhaps because of, his inner turmoil, Malachi keeps himself busy.  He spends his mornings as an apprentice car mechanic at Rick's used-car lot, his afternoons searching for meaning and direction in the stacks of the Fairvale Public Library, and his evenings doing his job at the train station, where he works side by side with Sula.
