Kids are capable of being incredibly cruel. But it really is true that their cruelty is rooted in as well as bred by ignorance. Kids don’t have any real grasp of what they’re doing or saying. They’re simply passing on whatever hurts they’ve received themselves. It’s like that game, hot-potato. Someone or something hurts you and, even if that someone is yourself, you don’t want to hold onto that hurt. Why? Because it hurts, that’s why. It burns, just like the hot-potato burns whoever holds it. So you want to be rid of that hurt as soon as you possibly can and so you pass it off to the next guy who does the same in turn and so on and so on, around and around it goes until the buzzer sounds and the poor soul who’s holding it at that moment gets stuck with the pain; sometimes for the rest of their life. I don’t think you ever learn what that kind of pain really feels like til you’re the one that ends up getting stuck holding it. As unfair as it may sound, some people get stuck holding that pain on the day that they’re born. And, y’know, as hard as it may be to believe, I think that there are some people who never have to feel that pain. There’s always someone standing by for them to hand it off to. I leave it to you to decide whether these people are lucky or not.
