2006 Scow Now Invitational Regatta Results
Dixie Sailing Club, AL
October 6 - 8, 2006
(Results and report submitted by Dick Cline on Oct 11, 2006)
WOW what a regatta it turned out to be. Fleet 39 old records showed we had held the Scow Now Invitational regatta once – in April 1991! We kind of figured it was time to try it again, so we put it as part of our clubs big fall regatta just to see how it works having a MC event. On Friday morning before the regatta we had 11 boats entered – 6 from our club and 5 visitors! Unfortunately by noon on Friday we were down to 7, as 3 possible visitors and one club member had to cancel.
They missed an awesome event! Total sunshine, blue sky, temps in the upper 70’s and wind!!! Saturday was four races, lasting almost 4 hours! Winds in the first race were 7 to 8 and by the start of the 4th race a fairly constant 17 with gusts in the lower 20’s. Racing was energetic and close all day, and the final race on Sunday morning would decide the overall winner.
The special part of this Scow Now was having Jim Gray from Fleet 3 in Atlanta attend. Jim had been there in 1991 for the 1st Scow Now, took 4th, and was looking forward to coming back because of all the fun he had way back then. At the end of the first day he was in first, but Phil Metz from Destin FL was a close enough second. Sunday saw good winds and more sunshine. Jim apparently decided he needed to wash off his mast and sail and boom before the start by having the headstay come off and putting them all in the lake, but got it back together and finished well, winning the regatta. Those that didn’t come sure missed a great set of races, and Fleet 39 is already planning next years Scow Now Invitational, without another 15 year delay between events. We hope to see more of the MC folks from the southeast there next time.
