Moving the Cow Town Classic a week later in 2006 really worked out well, with near perfect Spring sailing conditions on Hoover Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio April 29-30th. Temperatures in the 70’s combined with very shifty 8-12 mph winds provided the 22 competitors with a challenging regatta venue. Although we had a few capsizes due to the rapid velocity changes, the event was protest-free and nobody drowned.
Six races were completed as scheduled, allowing for a throw-out in the final tally. Local ace Sjoerd Jan Vanderhorst finished strong with a 1,1 on Sunday morning adding to his 2,7,4 from Saturday to take the win over two strong “team red’ members from New Jersey, Skip Moorhouse (3,3,4,1,5) and Bob Seidelmann (1,1,3,7,5). Skip was also 1st Grand Master. Zach Clayton was 4th and Scott Leppert, also from NJ, was 5th. Brian “Big Dog” Pace and Mark White (1st Master) tied for 6th with Brian winning the tiebreaker. Doug Kiser was 2nd Master and George Fisher was 1st Mega Master.
RC duties were ably performed by the local Thistle fleet, who set W3˝ courses due to the rare ESE breeze and the lake’s orientation. Major shifts caused a lot of “I’m in the lead, no, I’m last, no, 3rd …” amongst the competitors but in the end, the same talented individuals worked their way to the front.
Fleet #54’s famous prime rib dinner was enthusiastically received by all. Not sure if it’s the bigger draw for this annual regatta or the high caliber competition.
The results of the Cow Town are combined with the Cowan Scowin’ regatta held in the fall to award the Ohio MC Championship trophy. The 2005 recipient was Brian Pace.
