(Results and narrative submitted by Phil Weiler on September 30, 2003)
Despite the forecasts, 17 MCs competed in the 8th annual Cowan Scow’n regatta and enjoyed winds ranging from 5-15 mph with no foul weather. Five skipper’s competed in the regatta for the first time including Sean Treacy from New York, John Bregal from Columbus, Ohio and three new MC sailors from the growing local fleet 45.
The first three races were sailed in 10-15 mph. The Grand Master of Cowan Lake, Carl Pratt along with crew Marie Pratt won all three races with great starts and boat speed to burn. Throughout the regatta, the starts proved to be very competitive with several close calls between boats. Race #4 was won from wire-to-wire by collegiate sailor Michael Graham, who had only skippered an MC for a month of local racing prior to this regatta. Three skippers capsized during these races, but the water was still warm as it usually is this time of year at Cowan Lake.
“Big Dog” Brian Pace from Hoover Sailing Club (HSC) won race five. Even in the lighter air Big Dog reverse-heeled downwind and had plenty of boat speed to pass other MCs. Brian had consistently good starts, sailed the shifts well, and found the best lanes of wind. It was this consistency that enabled Brian to win race 5 and the regatta in the end.
The last race of the regatta had junior Jason Japiske in the lead for half of the race before the regatta’s Women’s champion, Judy Hearn took over and won the race sailing MC #2020 “Hindsight”.
