Assuming that there is voltage at the motor and the capacitor is wired correctly, that's about all that's left. Ok so I took the wires off the board and reconnected them all and it worked so maybe one of the connections were off!! The following are a few of the common reasons why an outdoor air conditioning unit will run while the fan inside will not.
An air conditioner’s airflow can be seriously compromised due to dirt and other debris accumulating on the evaporator coil.
You may be able to try one of several foams or sprays that you can find at your local hardware store to try and clean the coil. More than likely, this will be a problem that needs to be repaired by a professional technician. At Approved Comfort, we can fix your air conditioner problem no matter how large or small it may be. I thought they were phasing out R-22, but do not know the details or if there is an alternative. Either way, with the condenser fan motor inoperative, your compressor runs the risk of burning out if allowed to continue working without the help of the fan. We can't do this unless you're comfortable and knowledgeable about electricity and have a good multimeter, capable also of testing capacitance. The pic of the fan motor was sent to me, out of all places, from FLA, by a cousin of mine who I assisted over the phone and via e-mails.
I just stopped the unit and waited for 5 minutes and turned the unit on again, and the outside fan started up by itself so all appears to be normal now. My wife thinks I still should call a service guy and get a pro to look at it before the warranty runs out. It was nice to have a trained tech look at the unit to insure nothing else was wrong, but $400 was a bit much in my opinion. I have the similar problem, Compressor and Condensing FAN both comes on but after some time Condenser FAN stops but Compressor keeps on Buzzing.
I tried the stick test and the fan started running but i guess as soon as the house cools down and it shuts off I will have to do that again until I replace a capaciter.
If your air conditioner or heat pump won't start, we suggest beginning diagnostics indoors at the room thermostat.
Variations in line voltage can lead to improper compressor operation and loss of cooling output. If the compressor motor start relay does not pull in (close) then it is not asking the compressor to run. If there is no control voltage at the compressor's start relay and there is electrical power to the unit and the thermostat is callling for cooling, then one of the safety cut-out switches we mentioned above may have tripped.
We first mentioned at NOISES, COMPRESSOR CONDENSER that we had a field report from a reader who explained that a noisy outdoor compressor unit was, according to his HVAC service technician, traced to a blocked, clogged outdoor condensing coil. Compressor motor protection switch: some compressor systems include a protection module at the main power terminals for the compressor motor. Check the fan relay switch: if the fan relay does not pull in and there is control voltage to the relay then the relay is probably bad. If the fan relay does pull in but the fan does not run, check the line voltage and wiring to be sure power is being delivered to the fan.
If spinning the fan will start the motor and it keeps running then the motor's start capacitor is probably bad. If the fan motor has voltage but will not run at all then the motor may have failed or the motor's run capacitor may have failed. But before assuming that something is wrong with the air conditioning compressor, some basic investigation is in order. A blocked condensing coil can cause the compressor to overheat, stop running, or become noisy and work poorly. At BURNED-OUT COMPRESSOR we explain that if the condensing unit fan is not working the compressor itself may shut down or even be ruined by overpressure or over temperature.
Also see NOISES, COMPRESSOR CONDENSER where some noise problems are traced to the cooling fan .
My AC unit during the hot and humid months here in FL, will not run without some help from me.
My Air Conditioner (or heat pump) keeps cycling on and off too rapidly - what might be wrong? Short cycling air conditioner problems: Our air conditioning compressor cycles on and of every few seconds or minutes.
Oversized air conditioner - if the short cycling has always been a problem since the day the system was installed, there is a good chance that the unit is too big (too many BTUS) for the space being cooled.
But if someone is turning the system on and off quickly, the compressor may have a hard time re-starting against the pressure on its outlet side. In sum, you need a service call from a professional to correctly diagnose and repair the problem. If your air conditioner or heat pump has the opposite problem, staying on too long, see LONG-ON CYCLING AC COMPRESSOR. Several readers have described a step of cooling down an overheated air conditioning or heat pump compressor motor to get it running again producing cool air indoors. All three reported that this step got their cooling system cooling again when before either the compressor had stopped running entirely or it was running but the system was not producing cool air.
Amanda: if your system is not cooling there could be any of a number of problems - see the article above as a place to start.
Weak air conditioner air flow - is there a relationship between refrigerant charge level and weak cool air flow rate? Les: A leak that was fixed by a re-charge is not as good a repair as a leak that was fixed by finding and fixing the leak - you'll just have to keep adding refrigerant. But weak air flow out of the vents would not be due to a refrigerant leak; more likely a clogged filter or crushed or disconnected ductwork, or a blower fan problem. Weak air Flow traced to Clogged Air Filters: Can Clogged Air Filters Affect the Room Thermostat? Air Filters & Cooling System Amperage Draw: Could Removing the Air Filters Cause the Electric Motor in the Air Handler to Draw Higher Amps? Lost: this amps variation is beyond my expertise, but in general reducing the load on an electric motor will show up as lower amps or current draw, not higher amps.
If the HVAC suction line gets warm, you may be out of refrigerant, or the system may be running in heating mode if it's a heat pump. Becky, If a motorized HVAC zone control damper is not opening or closing, most likely the motor has failed, or the thermostat that operates that zone control is off or set in an incorrect position. My house has "zone" control with dampeners to close off the upstairs over the garage room unless that thermostat is on - the room is not cooling. I only see one available spot on the capacitor and would that house the brown or purple wire? Also, for the picture facing the entire unit, is the small electrical component in the right hand corner of the picture the contactor?

An introduction to air conditioner temperatures and some rules of thumb that are quick and easy to apply in diagnosing air conditioner problems. Low side temperature example: A home refrigerator evaporator coil will operate at an internal temperature range of -38 degF. Too Low air conditioning output temperatures may indicate that there is a problem with air movement in the system. If air moves too slowly across the coil its temperature may be lower than the numbers specified above.
NOTE about air conditioning refrigerant leaks: so a refrigerant leak in an air conditioning system may show up first as abnormally low system output air temperature, followed by rising air temperatures, followed by just plain old warm air coming out of the system, as the amount of refrigerant that has been lost increases. High temperature refrigeration equipment refers to cooling equipment that operates typically in the 25 degF to 45 degF, such as air conditioning systems. Medium temperature refrigeration equipment refers to cooling equipment that operates typically in the range of 0 degF to 25 degF, such as a food freezer or refrigerator. Low temperature refrigeration equipment refers to cooling equipment that operates typically at temperatures below zero, such as commercial freezing equipment.
These low side suction line temperature and pressure measurements will vary as a function of refrigerant, ambient temperature and other factors.
In normal air conditioner or heat pump or other refrigeration equipment operation we see positive pressure on both the HIGH side (high pressures) and on the LOW side (low pressures) of an HVACR system. Thanks to reader Charles for clarifying by comment that the suction line is under low pressure in HVACR systems during normal operation, 14 Aug 2015.
A clogged or frozen TXV that is not releasing refrigerant from the high side over to the low side of the system.
An oil slugged (oil logged) compressor, so refrigerant flow is blocked at the evaporator - oil slugging can lead to a compressor body failure. If your air conditioning or heat pump system has lost its cooling capacity or won't start see REPAIR GUIDE for AIR CONDITIONERS. See How to determine the cooling capacity of air conditioning equipment if the system seems to be working but is inadequate to cool your building. Continue reading at AIR CONDITIONER TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT or select a topic from the More Reading links or topic ARTICLE INDEX shown below. Please see AIR CONDITIONER TEMPERATURE FAQs or see the other articles suggested at More Reading just above.
Took off the shield and looked at the capacitor and although it wasn't bulging I went ahead and replaced it since it was a cheap part. The blower motor may start at full speed and then slow down once it becomes heated, or a faulty relay could cause it to start one time but not the next time.
In some cases, you can simply perform a visual test and see that a capacitor is bad, because it is either swollen or beginning to fall apart and spewing oil. If the blockage is severe enough, the coil can become iced over and the compressor damaged. However, if that does not work, then you will need a more thorough cleaning that involves the cutting of refrigerant lines, removal of the coil for cleaning, and then re-installation of the coil and lines, and a refrigerant recharge. Debris such as pet hair and dirt can clog your filter and cause several problems in addition to causing an inside fan not to run. To schedule an appointment to have one of our skilled and trained technicians take a look at your system, call Approved Comfort. I use them to get detailed checks on houses, if needed - and replacement is only a sometimes suggestion. I was assuming that the buzzing noise mentioned was the compressor running but apparently it was the reversing valve solenoid or something besides the compressor. I would definitley check on that local vocational tech school gig that pflor mentioned, if no luck there you might even check with your local Sheet Metal Union Hall as most of them also have HVAC journeyman upgrade classes and are looking for Guniea Pigs. But I hate the idea of having to pay for a service call where the dude comes in, says there is nothing wrong with the unit, and sticks me with a hefty service charge. Maybe I will just call Rheem and have them note in their database that we had a problem with the unit while the unit was in warranty - that way if it occurs again, we can infer that it was part of the same problem call.
This article summarizes common HVAC compressor condenser unit problems and their diagnosis.
If you haven't done that you might want to go back to see AIR CONDITIONER WON'T START before continuing here.
Is the refrigerant pressure in the system at the pressure level equivalent for the ambient temperature at the condenser unit? The low pressure switch normally will reset automatically when the low side pressure drops. We speculate that perhaps the compressor was running hot and that correcting air flow across the condensing coil corrected that condition. If there is no line voltage check the main breaker or fuse or the local service switch again. Lower than normal discharge pressure and higher than normal suction vacuum will indicate this problem.

Lets say it is 80 degrees and you set the thermostat at 75, it will run until temp drops about 3 degrees, then shuts off. Click on FROST BUILD-UP on AIR CONDITIONER COILS check for, diagnose, & repair that problem. You may be able to repair the short cycling problem temporarily by recharging the air conditioning system but the proper repair is to find and fix the leak. A more subtle version of this same problem is that you've done something like closing doors or adding a partition that had the effect of reducing the size of the space being cooled. Normally that head pressure bleeds off over time, making it easier for the compressor to re-start (against low head pressure) the next time it turns on. One reader used a garden hose to spray the outdoor unit (after all it's intended to tolerate being rained-on). Most equipment will tolerate this condition but an older unit or very hot sunny conditions may lead to thermal overheating and an overload circuit trip-off. Watch the fan to see that it is running while the compressor motor is on, and perhaps even before and after the compressor motor starts or stops. It may be possible to clean the coils of leaves, dirt, grass kicked up by nearby mowing, etc. Voltage variations and current draw at electric motors: If your supply voltage is varying from your power company that can show up as higher amps draw on the motor (though it's a suspicious coincidence to see it exactly when you removed the filters and supposedly reduced the load on the motor).
Here's an important tip: most refrigeration problems, in air conditioners, refrigerators, or freezers, are electrical, not mechanical. The text is intended as a reference guide to help building owners operate and maintain their home effectively. Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag. Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. Rules of thumb for temperatures you should find at various points in an air conditioning system. Some experts argue that this is the only accurate way to examine the cooling system and that measuring temperatures across the evaporator coil is unreliable. At air conditioning school we scoffed at repairmen who developed an air conditioning refrigerant delivery route - regularly adding refrigerant to what is supposed to be a closed, non-leaking system. The low side is also referred to as the vacuum line or suction line as it's the compressor input side.
If your blower motor is not running at the proper speed or running at all for that matter then you will need to contact a professional to correct the problem.
In other instances, you will need a special device to check a capacitor’s performance.
You may not realize you even have a problem until it becomes a major one, and can only be corrected by an air conditioner service professional. Obviously, unless you have a great deal of experience working with air conditioners, you will need to call in a pro. Look at your operations manual to find out what the best filter is for your model air conditioner, and follow the directions on how to replace the filter. Examining and repair wiring can obviously be an extremely dangerous undertaking please do not try and work on any sort of wiring project without first calling a trained technician. At the very least you might find a student that would be willing to work for Elcheapo for you if he does good and actually repairs it make sure and tip big LOL.
Below we give some summary diagnostics for non-starting compressor motors at the outdoor condenser unit. Modern compressor units include both high and low refrigerant pressure safety cut-out switches that can shut down the equipment in abnormal conditions.
Note: some systems incude a low ambient temperature control relay that will keep the system from running at low temperatures.
Sometimes we can mitigate this problem by running the blower fan at a lower speed or by opening interior doors to increase the size of the space being cooled or even by moving the thermostat. In this case when the motor cools down it may automatically reset itself and start up again - for a while. In air conditioning school, we used to drive out and collect abandoned refrigerators that people were tossing out during our community's spring cleanup week.
If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. It may be easy and profitable, and sometimes a refrigerant leak can be hard to find, but a proper repair is to find an fix the refrigerant leak, not just to keep adding refrigerant. Only during system installation or servicing would we actually pull a true vacuum on the system as part of evacuating it prior to installing a refrigerant charge.
If your problem is with your capacitor, this is another instance where you will be better off letting a technician fix it.
Keep in mind, however, that if you have several pets, or there are other conditions around your home that could cause the filter to be clogged faster than is typical, then you will more than likely need to change the filter more often than may be stated in your manual. I have already spent $200 on Tech he only changed the capacitor and problem started again few minutes after the tech left. The amount of power the motor draws is roughly related to the voltage times current (amps).
Taking these appliances back into the shop we found that almost always the problem that had caused the owner to dispose of their air conditioner or freezer was in an electrical connection or electrical control. The manual states that the unit has a 5 year warranty starting 6 months after the manufactured date. Back at AIR CONDITIONER WON'T START we reminded you to check that the thermostat was calling for cooling. So it's worth checking out switches and controls on an air conditioner before replacing more costly components.
