It’s always good for local businesses when they get some love in national media circles, especially serendipitously. As noted by NBC, the bit of endearing free advertising is a win for the whole community, and that the “49ers are definitely bringing people together.” Everyone likes sports! For more on the background of Hi Tops — and some pretty photos from the bar when it opened late last year — check out Peter Hartlaub’s nice piece from last month. About Inside Scoop Inside Scoop SF is a one-stop source for the latest restaurant coverage in the Bay Area and beyond, by the San Francisco Chronicle staff. Sports Illustrated assigned me to photograph the San Francisco 49ers diverse fan base as they played the NFC Championship game. Outsports was the first outlet to report on the photo in Sports Illustrated that showed two male fans kissing in a San Francisco gay sports bar after the 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons to reach the Super Bowl. It turns out that, thanks to intrepid reporting by Roman Jimenez of the San Diego Gay and Lesbian News, that the two guys live in San Diego and traveled to San Francisco to watch the game with 49er fans at Hi Tops.
For his part, Greg, who preferred not to use his last name, jokingly told SDGLN, “I was not involved” in the kiss.

And this week’s Sports Illustrated has a great photo of two 49ers fans celebrating the team’s Super Bowl clincher at Hi Tops, which bills itself as the city’s first and only gay sports bar. At halftime the 49ers were losing 17-0 but they came back and won it at the end of the 4th quarter. A close look at the picture shows Greg was like a purse in a roller coaster — more or less along for the ride. I was in Hi-Tops, a new gay sports bar in SF, photographing the reaction from behind the bar. Aaron Ochoco, a state of California worker from Mira Mesa is a 49ers diehard (that tells you how bad the Chargers have been lately) who converted his friend Greg to the cause.

The place was wall to wall with fans watching the dozen or so TVs placed in all corners of the bar. As the 49ers scored the winning touchdown I started shooting reaction and out of the corner of my eye saw these two male fans in 49er jerseys start to kiss.
This is the photo that my editor at Sports Illustrated chose to run in last weeks magazine.
This photo got a lot of attention this week on ABC News and Deadspin after 49er, Chris Culliver, made some homophobic comments.
This being Superbowl week, a lot of people were talking about gays and sports so I’m glad to help keep the conversation going about gays and sports.
The 49ers owner, Jed York, and coach Jim Harbaugh both came forward and said they will not accept those type of homophobic comments.
