The easiest wiring of a light switch you can do is with a single-pole standard light switch.   View the following wiring diagram instructions on the wiring of a switch and replace that switch today!  This article explains the two most common methods for wiring a basic light switch. One method is to bring the power supply in to the light fixture outlet box, and then use what is called a “switch-leg drop” to the switch box, and the other way is to bring power in to the switch box, and then run the “switched” cable up to the light or lights.  The second method is by far the best way, especially if you are using the switch to control more than one light outlet.
Run your 2-wire power feed cable to the outlet box for the light fixture.  Then run a 2-wire cable to the outlet box for the switch that will be used to control this light.
Properly install the cables in the device boxes and terminate your ground wires as per code rules and accepted trade practices.
The white neutral conductor from the source is connected to the white wire(s) or neutral terminal of the light fixture.  The remaining black wire returning from the switch will be connected to the black wire (s) or the hot or live terminal for the light fixture.
In the switch box, the white wire (which is a hot wire as described above) is again identified as such, and is connected to one of the terminals of the single-pole switch (It doesn’t matter which of the 2 terminals, but  personally I always use the bottom terminal for hot, the top terminal for the switched wire).  The black wire is then connected to the other terminal to complete the circuit. Run your power feed cable in to the switch outlet box first, then run a cable from the switch box up to your light outlet box. At the switch box, splice the incoming neutral or white wire to the white wire going to the light box. Connect the black live wire from the power cable in to one of the terminals on the single-pole switch (again, it doesn’t matter if you use the top or the bottom terminal of the switch, but I prefer to use the bottom terminal for the hot wire), and then connect the black wire from the cable going to the light fixture to the other terminal of the switch. At the light fixture, the white wire connects to the fixture neutral (white) wires or neutral terminal, and the black wire connects to the fixture live(black) wires, or hot terminal (terminals are found on basic fixtures such as keyless lampholders).  If you have more than one fixture to be controlled by the switch, then you would now run cable from this light fixture to other lights that you would like controlled by the switch.

You would have to check with the educational requirements for you particular location, but usually training for an Electrician is by an Apprenticeship program. I want to finish my basement and have some knowledge of electricity and want to put a switch in line with the 4 light fixtures that are pull strings, how?
We were upgrading our storage lighting from two lights, one on switch, one pullstring to two on switch and five on pullstrings.
I installed a ceiling light fixture and when I turned the power back on it was working yet the wall switch wouldn’t turn it off that I had installed. I have a light switch in the bathroom that has three black wires hooked into a single pole switch.
I have 2 new outside lights and i am trying to wire them up to an exiting outside light switch, which already has 2 brown wires in.
I want to thank you so much for the detailed awesome info that you give for wiring a light switch. I’m trying to add(2) fluorescent light fixtures from a switch that currently operates (10) light, But the switch has a 3-wire cable to a j-box that has a light fixture attached. I have a switch box which controls an outlet across the room, I would like to run from the out et a line to the outdoor light, between the outdoor light and the outlet I would like to add another switch to control the outdoor light. I have 3 recepticals on the same wire and I want to add a light switch the the middle receptical.
If I only have a black and white wire in my light switch receptical can I still install a motion sensitive device without a ground wire? Presently I have 2 lights on a switch, and I want to add an outlet so that the outlet is live, even when the switch is off. I have a 3 way switch for my outside house lights (1 in garage 1 in house) I want to make on a timer switch (garage) is this possible? I have recently installed a bathroom vanity light in a circular hole that was previously covered.
I removed an old, deteriorated light switch and replaced with a new switch, and no matter how I wire it, nothing happens. I have a pool light switch that has white and black wires i got new light switch for new LED light and switch instructions say white to white, red to red, black to black. I’ve changed the switch but when I flick the fuse on one light works normally and the other light stays on permanently and can’t be turned off by the switch how do I fix this problem? My new porcelain fixture has a connection for a hot and a neutral wire, leaving one white wire unconnected. The Home Depot Apron Blog has all of the detailed information on why LED light fixtures are outshining their traditional counterparts. Let The Home Depot take care of all of your lighting installation needs in a timely, professional manner. 2 way switching means having two or more switches in different locations to control one lamp. Here we have a two way switching system that utilises two single gang two-way switches and a three wire control, shown in the new harmonised cable colours.
Here we a have a schematic (Fig 1) which makes it easy to visualise how this circuit works. The schematic is nice and simple to visualise the principal of how a two way switch works but is little help when it coms to actually wiring this up in real life!!
Fig 2 below shows how we achieve this configuration. Just like any loop-in loop-out radial circuit, the switch cable from the ceiling rose contains two wires, a permanent live and a switched live.
I may be getting this wrong but looks to me that the blue core on cable C and the black core on D would be permanent live.

Hi, I’m adding another switch to the lighting circuit in my utility room and ive split what was a triple gang one way switch for lights, outside light and extractor fan to a one gang two way and a 2 gang one way. Yes Michael – you just need to introduce intermediate switch into a two way switching setup (sometimes called three-way switching or two-way plus intermediate). I am replacing my switches one of my old switches has 4 cables and 4 connections however my new 1 gang 2 way switch only has 3 connections . So if I understand you correctly, this is not 2 way switching and both lights work but it is the switch position you wish to change.
Hi, tried to replace my hall light which is operated by the switch in the hall only, but is a two way switch operating the landing light, which is a one way switch. I have 2 way switching in my bedroom, it seemed to work ok with standard filament bulbs but I have now swapped over to LED and have noticed a problem. I have bought a single gang PIR to automatically turn on a hallway light but the light is also independently switched on and off in another switch behind it… The new PIR has a COM and L1 port and the existing has a wire in COM, L1 and L2… Can I assume L2 is rage communication between the second switch and therefore place the wire from COM to COM on the PIR and the wire from L1 to L1 on the PIR, can the L2 wire be left loose or could I add that to L1 on the PIR? Sometime ago, thinking the upstairs hall light was off, I discoved the light bulb had a small glow. Hi I have a new 2way light switch which does not have a com on it,how would I go about switching it over?.
I’m confused as to why they are identically wired and have a 3 and 4 core in both switches.
Earthing metal switch faceplates – your diagrams only suggest this for one of the switches; surely it should be for both! There is a note on the diagram regarding earthing metal face plates and the earth loop shown on one of the switches illustrates this.
I ran a typical loop in loop out radial to each rose and brought the master (4 gang) strappers back individually from each of the single 2 way switches.
I double checked my wiring and confirmed that each set of switches are wiring indentically, 3 wiring, 2 way arrangement. Hello, quick question, does the three core and earth loop in and out of multiple lights, reason I ask is I have 2 single gang 2 way lights switches and 3 lights, all the diagrams show is B to the next light but not the 2 way control?
World Cup fans looking for that special souvenir from Brazil should know it is illegal to buy parrots, iguanas and other wildlife, authorities said Wednesday, releasing a list of environmental guidelines for tourists. Monkeys, birds, snakes, butterflies, spiders and scorpions are also included on the list of off-limits purchases and activities compiled by officials in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, whose capital Natal is a World Cup host city. The list warns tourists not to buy jewelry or crafts made from wild animals, including anything with feathers, teeth, leather or butterfly wings.
Buying wildlife, dead or alive, is punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 reals ($2,300, 1,700 euros) per animal and a prison sentence of up to one year, it says. The list also advises tourists not to take pictures next to people offering photo ops with wild animals, "even if they seem tame.
It advises tourists hiring dune-buggies to explore the region's pristine beaches to use only licensed guides to avoid crushing nests made by turtles or birds. Finally, for those who truly fall in love with the landscape of northeast Brazil, the guide warns them to consult environmental authorities before buying a beachfront house or plot of land.
Around 600,000 foreign tourists and 3.1 million Brazilians are expected to travel to the 12 World Cup host cities during the tournament, which kicks off June 12.
Natal is hosting four matches, including games featuring the United States, Japan and Mexico. Blue-and-yellow macaws from Amazonia, green parrots, monkeys, turtles, anacondas and pumas: wild animal trafficking is a very lucrative business that spares no species in Brazil, including those facing extinction. World Cup organizers said Wednesday that an estimated 320 tons of solid waste which the June 12 to July 13 event is expected to generate will be sent for recycling.
Brazil announced a package of pollution-cutting measures aimed at making this year's World Cup more environmentally friendly, ranging from an emissions-trading scheme to a "green passport" smart-phone application.
Scientists have documented for the first time how competition among different malaria parasite strains in human hosts could influence the spread of drug resistance. A fungal disease that poses a serious threat to cacao plants - the source of chocolate - reproduces clonally, Purdue University researchers find. Contact lenses may alter the natural microbial community of the eyes, according to a study published this week in mBio, an online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. Scientists from the University of Leeds have solved a 25-year-old question about how a family of proteins allow bacteria to resist the effects of certain antibiotics. Scientists have revealed the brain activity in animals that helps them find food and other vital resources in unfamiliar environments where there are no cues, such as lights and sounds, to guide them. We got the lights installed and wired but had a heckuva time figuring out the connections for the switch.
I found that the hallway light just outside of the bathroom is connected through this switch.
If power comes into the switches first then the Black wire feed stays in the box and connects to each switch. The light in the bathroom is now on and also the socket but I had to disconnect the wires from the light switch so the trip would stay on!!! Both beautiful and efficient, these eco-friendly lights offer energy efficiency and will last up to 50,000 hours.

They are wired so that operation of either switch will control the light. This arrangement is often found in stairways, with one switch upstairs and one switch downstairs or in long hallways with a switch at either end. It is possible to achieve a similar result using a two wire control which, although it saves on cable, is not recommended. In this state the lamp is off, changing the position of either switch will switch the live to the lamp turning it on. I’ve run 2 cables between the main and new utility light switches as per the diagram. The hall light works fine.but the outside light is on when the switch is in the off position and vice versa.
When I took the old hall light down, the three red wires were joined together, the three earth wires joined together but only two of the three black wires were joined, one remained isolated.
If you’d mentioned this method of wiring I could have taken the faceplate off one of the switches before I spent an hour lifting flooring in the loft hunting for non-existent junction boxes.
The downstairs light is controlled by two switches, one at main door, the other(x) near the back of house.
Eventually the bulb blew, having replaced it, I now find the two switches don’t talk to each other. The radial covers 4 office rooms and required a single 2 way switch in each office and a master 4 gang switch by the main door.
Upon performing a functional test, each set of switches worked fine until I got to the last set. And it warns Scuba divers and snorkelers that taking corals from the region's dazzling reefs is also forbidden. We had a total of five wires in the box: one for run of new lights, one for single new light, one from switch, one from power feed, one out to bathroom.
When I turned the power back on the ceiling fixture went on but the switch wouldn’t turn it off.
The white joins together with the wire to each light feed and the black from each light return joins to the corresponding switch remaing screw.
It also had a place for another connection (basically 4 connection screws with one black and two white connections and one empty). I connected the black and red wires from the box to the black wire from the fixture and the white wires together. The super slim panels are a true flat mount with evenly distributed light producing no glare, flicker or hot spots as the entire fixture is the light. However, my Cable A (live supply) has always come directly into the original triple switch not to the first spot in the sequence.
Attempted to put the new light up with all red wiring into the minibloc, all earth into the minibloc and all black into the minibloc, result- blown fuse.
Managed to figure out how to control 3 lights in one room with intermediate switches on the desk and bedside lamp from your diagrams. By that I mean, one will switch on, but the other switch won’t turn it off and visa versa. The single 2 way switch did switch on the light and would only allow the 4 gang switch to operate if the L1 of the 2 gang switch was open. I have bought a new touch switch that has only L1 and L2 which I would like to use upstairs, which is the switch with the two lives connected together L2 and the switch lives connected together out of L1. I ran a new piece of Romex from new fan to switch area, installed double gang box, have second switch, but can’t seem to get right combination to get both devices working. Obviously one shouldn’t work live anyway but the switched lives should be correctly sheathed. I’m thinking the Cable A brown is permanently live therefore should go into Main switch L1, is that correct, and, if so where can I connect the neutral??from your image, it looks like it should go somehow directly to the first spot, but running a cable to connect it is not really feasible without cutting into my newly plastered ceiling and walls. There is a dome light in the bathroom that is controlled from a wall switch but I was not able to see if there where anymore wires leading to the circular hole that may act as a switch wire. It was the perfect answer (method 1, step 3) and detailed EXACTLY how to connect the switch wires to the power and light wires. I am getting roughly 120-123 volts on each black but nothing through the neutral when the lights are switched to on.
