Recently, some people who have received a Daith piercing have coincidentally found improvement with their migraine headaches. If a person enjoys ear piercing and suffers from frequent headaches, it may be worthwhile to consider getting this spot pierced.
This post has received an incredible amount of views in the last few months, and many people have spoken out about their experience with a Daith piercing.
First, anyone who read the above post can clearly see that we’re not saying this is a well-studied, documented and thoroughly researched alternative. That is NOT where my licensed acupuncturist and DOCTOR of Chiropractic place the needle in the ear for migraines!!!!!!
I am not aware of whether or not this is across the board, but my acupuncturist has a Master’s degree in Chinese Medicine, and this treatment kicks the ass of any traditional medical treatment I have received for my migraines. I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate the fact that you are trying to help migraine sufferers who have tried everything they can to minimize them. At the end of all options for pain relief and tired of medications that are addictive, I did this piercing yesterday. I can’t say for certain if it would do anything for back pain, but try massaging the ear area during a painful bout. Thank You Dr Cohn, This article made a difference for me and helped with my decision to get my Daithe Pierced yesterday. I suffer from Migraines weekly & have for years, I woke up this morning very clear headed and still feel great. Sad you think this way, he’s a doctor and your not, you could have replied differently instead of being rude. I have suffered from migraines all my life as well and have been researching this for a couple weeks now.
I would call around to places who do piercings and ask how familiar they are with the Daith piercing.
Several conditions can cause people to develop a shooting pain in left side of their heads. Sharp pains in the head can appear from the blues and occur on one side or even both sides.
According to NBTS (National Brain Tumor Society), brain tumors may cause sharp pain that occurs on the left side of a person’s head. Brain tumors damage nerves, increase pressure in the skull, damage tissues of the brain and can shift the brain. According to NINDS (Neurological Disorders and Stroke), trigeminal neuralgia, which is a disorder of the nerves, can bring about sharp pains in the head and face.
Tumor or swelling of the blood vessels (which can lead to the inflammation of the nerves known as trigeminal) and multiple sclerosis can cause trigeminal neuralgia disorder. This nerve (the trigeminal nerve) connects the facial skin to the brain by transmitting sensory information. The signs of brain tumor depend on its size and the exact location of the brain where it develops. Pain in the head that is sharp and persistent, problem with vision, dizziness, difficulties in speaking, loss of sensation, change in behavior, hearing problems and unsteadiness are some signs of brain tumor. Signs of giant cell arteritis include fever, double vision, pain in the jaw when chewing, sharp pains in the head, loss of weight as well as tenderness in the scalp.
When the pain on the left side of the head persists and gets severe even after taking some rest (OTC medication must be totally avoided), one should seek medical treatment because it signals a serious underlying health problem.
Radiation or chemotherapy can help to treat brain tumors although in severe cases, the tumors are removed surgically. Cluster headaches are rare, extremely painful and debilitating headaches that occur in groups or clusters. Triggers Nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate), hydrocarbons (petroleum solvents, perfume), Alcohol, napping etc.
Bright lights, loud noises, changes in sleep patterns, exposure to smoke, skipping meals etc. Cluster headaches are frequently associated with Horner's syndrome, ptosis (drooping eyelids), conjunctival injection (which results in red, watery eyes), lacrimation (tearing), miosis (constricted pupil), eyelid edema, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea (runny nose), and sweating on the affected side of the face. Sensitivity to light is more typical of a migraine, as is vomiting, but both can be present in some sufferers of cluster headache, although rare.
It has been known to strike at the same time each night or morning, often at precisely the same time during the day a week later.
While migraines are diagnosed more often in women, cluster headaches are diagnosed more often in men. First-degree relatives of sufferers are more likely to have the condition than the population at large. For less severe migraines, over-the-counter NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may provide sufficient relief.
Triptan drugs can provide relief for both migraine sufferers and those suffering from cluster headaches. Doctors may recommend preventive treatment for migraines and cluster headaches, particularly if one has multiple episodes over short periods of time. Surgery is very rarely recommended for these health problems, as there is not enough evidence yet to suggest that surgery provides relief over time. Imagine if someone took a huge, dull, rusty battle axe and just chopped you right in the side of your head, and your eye, cheekbone, jaw, and teethe just exploded from your body and then someone began digging your brains out with a spoon through your ear. I have tried melatonin, however, it wasn't helpful, tried it for 2 months, bottle sits in a drawer, i've tried magnesium as suggested by others, to no avail, another bottle sitting in a drawer. I suffered Beast attacks on a regular basis from age 14 until I started taking Adderall for a completly unrelated diagnosis of adult ADD. I take topiramate for my clusters which is primarily for epilepsy and I have been cluster free now for 2 years. My fiance also suffers from cluster headaches believed to have come from epilepsy, but oxygen DOES NOT work for him. He's been on hundreds of medications that didn't work, and the only thing that works for him is methadone from his pain doctor. I have cluster headaches and my insurance will not pay for the oxygen so I use the shot, it works rather quickly. Headaches are one of the most debilitating common complaints presented to primary health care practitioners.
Once you have ruled out that your headache may be from a more serious problem you now fit into the category of 90% of headache sufferers that suffer from a benign headache.
The definition benign headache was probably named by somebody that never had headaches as surely most benign headache suffers would agree that benign headaches are anything but benign. The Tension headache, also known as the cerviogenic headache is the most common type of headache and also the type of headache that responds best to Chiropractic treatment. A tension headache is characterised by dull pain that is more continuous than other types of headaches.
Sitting with the head forward for a long length of time causes the muscles right up behind the skull, also known as the sub-occipital muscles, to be overworked and go into spasm. Some research suggests that very tight sub-occipital muscles may interfere with blood flow at the base of skull which severs the problem.
Due to the fact that Chiropractic looks at the entire structure of the body, treatment has yielded good results in relieving tension headaches. Through postural analysis Chiropractors can determine which segments in the vertebra are doing more than their fair share of the work in holding up the spine against the forces of gravity. Trigger-point and muscle-release work on the tight neck muscles are also an important part of treating tension headaches.
It’s hard to say how significant a study of 18 patients is, and previous reports on Botox for Migraines have been mixed at best.
I’m imagining a time when you can describe your pain, and get a specific treatment for it. We need to cultivate our support systems – building them up when we feel well so they will be there when we need them. Doctors – you need a good medical doctor to track and coordinate your care and help you find appropriate medication. Complementary practitioners – chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, bio-feedback practitioners, and nutritionists, among others, can help you relax, rechannel your energy, maintain your general health, manage and reduce pain.
Coaches – a coach can help you create a plan to manage your life with Migraine and help you generate the energy and enthusiasm to move ahead with your plan.
Medication support – you need medication choices to support you in preventing migraines and stopping them when they occur.
My allergist suggested at the time (nearly 6 years ago) that since all these reactions happened within a few months, when my system calmed down I might not be allergic to everything. Lo, 5+ years of living without these meds later, my headache specialist would like me to get tested for aspirin and acetominophen to see if we can expand my available Migraine medication options.
So last week I went to talk to my primary doctor about doing said challenge tests in his office. The first in a series of posts on Migraineurs making choices for our health care and our lives.

The pain can strike at any time.  When it comes, it throbs and pounds on one or both sides of your skull. You may risk job loss from frequent unpredictable absences or inability to perform at top productivity.
You may be overwhelmed by all there is to manage, even with medical help – treatments, lifestyle changes, remembering all your meds and supplements at the right times, tracking your migraine triggers, recognizing patterns. And while dealing with all of this, you struggle to remember that you are more than just your migraines.

You are not just a patient, or a chronically ill person.  You are a unique human being with things to contribute, people who love you, talents and strengths. Many of us struggle along for years, either with or without the diagnosis of “Migraine,” taking pain killers and coping with the migraines when they come, and then something happens.
I wrote the free e-course “The Six Keys to Manage Your Migraines and Take Back your Life” to help people in that situation – people who are trying to get the information and support they need to cope with, manage, and recover from debilitating migraines. Since body piercings are generally less than $100, this may be a very economical treatment alternative. However, I am a little disappointed to how some people are quick to chastise this option, saying it isn’t rooted in any concrete evidence.
Hopefully we can find more hard evidence, and scientists are learning more every day about the underlying reasons why regionalized stimulation may help with headaches. Board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation with additional board-certification in pain management from the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) and the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM). My best best is to visit a piercing store and talk with the staff to see if they are familiar with the procedure, if they’ve performed it before, and if their patients have had success.
I have got the Daith pierced and I have been so happy not for my head to hurt from migraines .
I’m merely trying to help those who suffer from migraines find relief when other methods have failed. I’ve tried almost every migraine medicine out there and needless to say nothing works. I have suffered from migraines since I was twelve years old, so for over twenty-four years now. I am excited to say I had a very painful headache all day, The minute I was pierced the headache went away!!! I am so very hopeful that this piercing will save me and help me to live a normal life again.
I have Ehlers Danlos , the vascular form, (which I guess as a woman means I should play the lottery) and a history of migraines from the age of two.
Ear seeds are small seeds from the Vaccaria plant that are held in place on the ear with a small piece of adhesive tape. Although migraine headaches are the major cause of pain in the head, the pain is never shooting but dull and throbbing.
In fact, this kind of pain in the head can be so severe that one might not be able to perform their daily activities. Another cause of the sharp pain in the head is the giant cell arteritis that entails inflammation of the inner lining of the arteries that is very painful. Giant cell arteritis is also known as temporal arteritis because it only occurs in the brain’s temples deep within the arteries found in the head. The identification of the brain tumor through its signs plays a great role in its treatment. Sharp pains that increase in intensity on the left side of the head or face are a major sign of the trigeminal neuralgia. Steroids aid in treating giant cell arteritis while the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia involves the use of anticonvulsants and antispasmodic agent.
Migraine headache is caused by a combination of vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessels. The neck is often stiff or tender in association with cluster headaches afterwards, and jaw and teeth pain are sometimes reported. Less commonly, those with cluster headaches are prescribed oxygen for use during headaches.
Anti-nausea drugs are commonly used as well, since many sufferers experience nausea or vomiting during a migraine. Preventive treatment may include lifestyle or dietary changes and will often include some form of ongoing prescription medication.
For almost a week after I started I had a single medium CH each morning when I woke up, after that I stopped having them completely. Our bodies sometimes have difficulty in adjusting, which manifests itself in the form of headaches or migraines. Breathing in oxygen from a tank at 8 liters ---just as soon as I feel a headache coming on can stop it within 5-10 minutes. An estimated 27% of all Females and 14% of all Males suffer from regular bouts of headache. If you suffer from a recent onset of headaches it is very important that you see a primary health care practitioner to get a proper diagnosis. This means that there is no known disease pathology that is causing your headache (such as meningitis or a tumor). Pain is often experienced at the front of the head and increases with long periods of working under stress. If this condition occurs for too long, painful hypertonic trigger points develop and the tension headache is formed. For every inch that the head is carried forward, the stress on the neck muscles increases by approximately the weight of your head (about 5kg).
This is because many of the nerves that supply the skull actually come of the upper cervical spinal segments. This study reports an average reduction from 7 Migraines per month to 1 Migraine per month, among those who responded to the Botox. Long story which you may have read here, 2 near-death anaphylactic reactions to Advil, hives from Tylenol, swollen lips from an aspirin-based product, yada-yada. But said allergist would not do challenge tests on me for the medications for fear of liability, and she was also a screaming nasty unprofessional person whose sorry butt got fired. My primary doctor told me 6 months ago that he thought he could do such a test in his office. So I should find an allergist who would admit me as an inpatient and do the test in the hospital. At least then it would be one doctor asking it of another instead of some crazy-sounding patient? If you take this course of treatment it will cost you $2500 and you will feel worse for 2 months, 3 days and 16 hours, but then you will lose 30 pounds, become a natural blond, your Migraines will cease forever and you will never age another day. The correlation is based on the success for some people with acupuncture in the same region of the Daith piercing. If you suffer migraines and are very unsure whether you want a piercing, trying acupuncture first would be a good alternative to determine if this treatment may be successful.
Many of those people likely saw the headline or skimmed the article and assumed I was simply trying get people to shell out more money for an unproven option that, in their opinion, can at best provide some pseudo-placebo effect. I wrote a recent post that sheds more light on the role the vagus nerve plays in the equation and how the medical community is continuing to search for concrete answers. As someone whose life seems to be ruled by migraines, thank you for trying to help those of us who are in pain.
I keep fioricet in my purse, take topamax at night and periodically have to go to Urgent Care or ER for cocktail. The tension headache is thought to have many causes but one of the most common causes is our modern lifestyle. This is why treatments at Mulllumbimby Chiropractic also include many soft tissue techniques. However, sometimes those management techniques prove ineffective, making the headache hard to treat.
If this is not working, and the migraines are not being well managed, further discussions with your medical practitioner about treatment options is warranted.
Having read their comments and seen stories refuting Daith piercings, I just wanted to clarify some misconceptions. Pain is a very personal issue, and having someone belittle a potential treatment technique, which appears to have worked for some commenters, adds nothing positive to the goal of solving the pain problem.
I have been told in the past that people who are prone to hypertrophic scarring should NEVER pierce their cartilage.

So far Imitrex seem to help some when I catch it early enough but it's not that great either. What really interests me, though, is the fact that the description of the pain itself is indicative of whether the Botox will help or not. What about that one where little people with grapefruit spoons are trying to scrape your brain off the inside of your skull? The people who support me remind me that every day will not be so bad, that life is still worth living, that there is hope.
I also no longer have problems going to sleep, sleeping too hard, or getting frustrated, which for me was a sure way to have one. I tried the needless one and it seemed more potent but then switched to the needle Imitrex.
Pain is so subjective, and so difficult to measure, it’s fascinating that there could be a correlation between how we experience the pain and the mechanics of our Migraines. The things that support me give a structure to my life that I can count on when I am not functioning at my best.
Herzog et al studied the effect of botox injections in cats and concluded that the injections caused measurable weakness in neighboring muscle groups.
The one and only thing for me that works about half the time is oxygen at 8-10 liters a minute at the onset of a shadow for 10 to 15 minutes. For me the first time the pain was so incredibly intense I thought for sure, knew for sure, I was dying from a brain tumor or something and called 911. It didn't make them go away at all but sometimes it seemed to decrease the intensity of the attack.
When the EMT's showed up I was in so much pain it through of my EKG enough for them to suspect that I was having a heart attack and sped me off to the hospital. Yes my teeth, jaw and eye are in severe pain along with the someone is stabbing you in side of your head behind the eye pain.
Like the other commenter, I believe the preservatives in the food may cause these issues + headaches run on my dad side. I've been in anaphalactic shock so bad from a sulfa allergy they had to jump start my heart in the hospital 14 times in 24 hours. It's amazing that my younger brother and I both suffer from these types of headaches and we're both right-handed.
I smashed my right hand once in a fork-truck accident years ago and broke 17 bones and severed all the main tendons. To be perfectly honest I think the only reason I have not is because when it happens I don't have the strength physically, my thought processes get all confused, and I loose motor control and sometimes have seizures.
And by the time it finally starts to subside I'm left terrified at what I was just about to do. If you really do have cluster headaches ( I suspect many on this forum who claim to be are not and their doctor is in error) then I feel for you.
