Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Bites are extremely common and can cause significant pain and other problems, especially when associated with an infection. Many factors may contribute to the infection, including the type and location of the wound, pre-existing health conditions in the bitten person that impair immunity, such as diabetes, HIV, etc., the extent of delay before treatment, the presence of a foreign body in the wound, and the animal causing the bite. Animal bites to the hand most frequently occur on the fingers of the dominant hand of children between the ages of 5 and 14. Human bite wounds contain very high concentrations of bacteria so the risk of infection is high.
If the bite results in swelling, redness, warmth, continued pain beyond 24 hours, pus draining from the bite wound, red streaks extending up the arm or forearm, swollen lymph nodes (“glands”) around the elbow or in the armpit, loss of mobility, loss of sensation in the hand or fingertip, fever, malaise, night sweats, or rigors, emergency treatment should be sought either in your physician’s office or the emergency room. It is crucial to update your tetanus status if you have not had a booster shot within the past ten years. The use of antibiotics for animal bites depends on the particular circumstances of the injury, patient health and sensitivity to various medications, and the appearance of the wound. Follow-up care is crucial in the case of animal bite wounds, to ensure that infection is diminishing or has not developed, and to restore the hand as much as possible to its former condition. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal agency which monitors and controls human diseases, estimates over 4.7 million people are bitten per year.
Cooperate with the animal control official responsible for acquiring information about your dog. Do not just give your dog to someone else if your dog's dangerous behavior cannot be controlled. Do not disturb a dog while she's sleeping, eating, chewing on a toy, or caring for puppies. Today, at her cosy home in the North-West, Katie, who runs a voluntary information line to help aspiring models, remains shocked and bewildered by what unfolded that sunny May evening earlier this year.
It is a favourite stroll on which she frequently meets other local dog walkers, among them a woman in her 60s with a young Alsatian cross, with whom she always exchanged pleasantries.
One was hanging by a thread, the other bitten clean off and lying on the ground, where Katie had to scoop it up. Nonetheless, according to Trevor Cooper, principal of Cooper & Co Solicitors, specialists in dog law, the attack on Katie would probably have been regarded by the police as a criminal offence.
Ed Frawley discusses two different ways to break up a dog fight whether you're alone or with someone. I assume you read the article I wrote on HOW TO BREAK UP A DOG FIGHT WITHOUT GETTING HURT.
I need to say that if we had these dogs (and we have 4 house dogs), we would manage the dogs differently so these fights never happened.
You hit the nail on the head when you said when you said grabbing the collar worked up to this one time. I just read your article in breaking up a dog fight, and thought id send you these two pics. I just wanted to let you know how helpful your website has been to me over the past few months, and share with you a few photos of what happened to me when I broke up a fight.
The initial meeting of the dogs was done at the rescue facility, with their trainers on hand. About a month into the newly integrated pack, we were comfortable enough with the dogs' behavior toward each other that we took the leashes off in the house, and allowed them to just be in collars. The dogs have been buddies since except for 2 minor squabbles that I was able to diffuse almost immediately. It wasn't until afterwards that I was told by my children that the dog repeatedly bit the children in the home, another neighbor child and my son at one point! Here is a picture of a dog bite received while trying to break up a fight between my two beloved dogs, 85lbs & 65lbs.
Hi Cindy, I wanted to make a contribution to the dog bite photo, I know there was an email address set for that specifically but I couldn't find it, only that this is not a domestic one, it's a sport dog bite. I am some pretty severe dog bites after trying to break up a fight between two males the other night if you're interested.

Early recognition of warning signs and appropriate treatment are key in minimizing potential problems from the bite.
Dogs are responsible for most animal bites in this country (up nullto 90%), with cat bites accounting for about 5% of such injuries.
A complete history of the bite, including the type of animal and its status (general health, rabies vaccine, behavior), the time and location of the event, circumstances of the bite, whereabouts of the animal, and pre-hospital treatment will be reviewed. If an infected bite to the hand goes untreated for too long, x-rays may reveal evidence of osteomyelitis, or the spread of infection to the bone. Your doctor or other medical personnel will wash the wound and might trim away any devitalized (dead) tissue, damaged skin, blood clots, or other particles that could be a source of infection. Some bites require the use of IV antibiotics, while others may be treated with oral medication. It is sad, indeed, when a person who has suffered a dog bite can no longer feel comfortable around animals, and may in fact, be terrified of them. Introduce your dog to many different types of people and situations so that he or she is not nervous or frightened under normal social circumstances.
Participating in puppy socialization and dog training classes is an excellent way to help you and your dog learn good obedience skills.
Avoid playing aggressive games with your dog such as wrestling, tug-of-war, or 'siccing' your dog on another person.
Obtain a license for your dog as required by law, and provide regular veterinary care, including rabies vaccinations. This should include your name and address, name of the dog, the date of your dog's last rabies vaccination, and the name and phone number of your veterinarian.
If your dog must be quarantined for any length of time, ask whether he may be confined within your home or at your veterinarian's hospital (this is usually determined by the dog's rabies vaccination status). Consult with your veterinarian, who may refer you to an animal behaviorist or a dog trainer. Because you know your dog is dangerous, you may be held liable for any damage he does even when he is given to someone else. To avoid being bitten, never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one who is tied or confined behind a fence or in a car.
Use your coat, purse, book bag, bicycle, or other object to separate yourself from the dog. By responsibly taking care of your dog and educating other dog owners, you can help prevent dog bites. In a horrifying heartbeat, her instinct to intervene and save her dog Lola from a vicious attack by an Alsatian had resulted in her own fingers being savaged when the dog turned on her. I know this is not the same situation but the majority of it will still apply to your dog. After finding your site on how to break up a dog fight I saw you were looking photos of the bite so here is mine. I thought I should share with you a couple bites I have occured during my ordeals with my two dogs.
Other biting animals include rodents (at least 2%), rabbits, ferrets, farm animals, monkeys, and reptiles.
Infections occur more frequently in cat bites because cats have extremely sharp, pointed teeth that can cause deep puncture wounds.
Often, human bites occur when a person’s fist is driven into another’s mouth, such as during a fistfight. Training your dog is a family matter, and every member of your household should be involved and use the same training techniques.
Do not pet an unfamiliar dog without the owner's permission, and make sure to let the dog see and sniff you first.
You can help by supporting dog bite prevention educational programs in schools, and teaching children and adults the proper way to approach unfamiliar pets and avoid being bitten.
The resulting wounds were so severe that Katie, a former model whose legs were once used in a Pretty Polly advertisement, lost two fingertips and, although they were salvaged and stitched back on, they still cause her great pain more than six months later and she does not have full sensation or movement.

Yet this latest incident has, she says, left just as profound a legacy. It happened one evening when the still-warm sun persuaded Katie to take her dog for a brief walk to the bottom of her road and back.
The only thing I can do to minimize the damage to humans and dogs is to have a good plan, and the right tools.
I had two female pit bulls both around 4 years old at my house, one was my own dog the other was a friend's. We never expected the dog to get his head out because we didn't believe a) that he would fit and b) that he would even try it, the holes were only 15 cms big. The skin usually flaps over the bite, thereby sealing off the puncture wound, precluding open drainage and allowing an infection to develop (see Figure 1). They may ask your assistance in locating the animal so that it can be confined and observed for symptoms of rabies. If your dog overreacts to visitors or delivery or service personnel, keep him in another room. If you must give up your dog due to dangerous behavior, consult with your veterinarian and with your local animal care and control agency or humane society about your options. By complete coincidence a friend was passing in her car, and stopped when she saw I needed help. I grabbed the doodles collar to get him off the terrier and was about to grab the terriers collar with my other hand when the terrier went for the doodles neck, and got my hand instead. It is the dominant dog starting the fight and not linked to toys, food or me being present (fought without me). Those few seconds when the dog got to him nearly gave me a heart attack, when you can't see if the dog got to the flesh or if it's just the clothes, but it was a relief when the dog pulled and it only ripped the pants. When the wound is infected, a culture is obtained to identify the type of bacteria that is causing the infection and thus help determine the antibiotic that is most effective for treatment.
Do not wait for an unacceptable behavior to become a bad habit, or believe your dog will 'grow out of it.' If your dog exhibits dangerous behavior toward any person, particularly toward children, seek professional help from your veterinarian, an animal behaviorist, or a qualified dog trainer.
Dogs who spend a great deal of time alone in the backyard or tied out on a chain are more likely to become dangerous. New owners may be possible if they have a good knowledge of dog behavior and training, and are fully aware of the dog's behavior problems.
I pulled a handkerchief out of my pocket and strapped my hand up, pushing the bitten fingertips back on. The maximum penalty available is up to two years in prison, an unlimited fine and a presumption that the dog shall be destroyed.
Although I thought I had driven home how she should treat dogs she did make a mistake but the largest problem was the negligence on the owners part.
He does have the dog's fangs printed on his calf but it was a minimal injury compared to what it could have been.
Your community animal care and control agency or humane society may also offer helpful services. It also means you will be protected financially in the event of a civil action being brought.’Katie would like to see insurance made compulsory, and hopes to launch a nationwide campaign calling for tighter regulations for dog owners. That’s when the other dog turned on me and bit my right hand.’It was at this point that the owner was finally able to pull her away.
They took the cast off, but am supposed to wear a heavy splint for 24 hours except when I'm soaking my hand in hot water. The male doodle always fights with my little terrier, then the female doodle jumps in, then my big dog jumps in to take the male doodle off the terrier. Yet I realise I’m in a minority — many people take on the ownership of dogs without any thought or real responsibility.’ Few reading this could disagree. Doctors said they hoped my fingers could return to full function but they couldn’t be sure.’ Katie was told she must not use her right hand under any circumstances for a minimum of eight weeks.
