Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Personal protection puppy training
I do not understand all of the hullabaloo over the new WHO report that says processed meats, such as bacon, sausage, and lunch meat, cause cancer. Cancer-causing (or carcinogenic) foods are those that cause damage to your cells’ DNA because they create what are called free radicals (highly reactive molecules with an unpaired valence electron). Enter your email address to follow this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. Being good pet parents, we are always looking for ways to please our fur babies. As hard as many of us may try to keep our dogs on their canine diets, sometimes we just can’t resist slipping them an occasional human morsel.
Coconut is made up of a beneficial fatty acid chain called Lauric acid, and when dogs and humans synthesize Lauric acid it produces a compound called monoglyceride monolaurin. Many diseases and ailments, like yeast infections, smelly coats, hot spots, cuts that have been infected, and even cracked paws, can all be cured with just a jar of “virgin coconut oil.” When all forms of diet remedies have failed, then it is time to try out this miracle natural medicine for your dog. A few years ago, Consumers Union looked into the question of aflatoxins in peanut butter and found that the amounts detectable varied from brand to brand.
BUT, before you break out the Jif for you or your dog, you need to know that another issue with the cheaper brands is that they contain trans-fatty acids.
And if trans fats aren’t bad enough, roasting nuts can also cause the fats in peanuts to go rancid.
Studies have found that coconut oil can kill viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, hepatitis C, SARS, AIDS, and other illnesses. Think chicken, beef, or pork with no visible fat and no added sauces or seasonings can be a great training treat or can add a bit of good-quality extra protein to your dog’s diet.
Used in moderation, this meat is also a good choice and available freeze-dried in most pet stores It makes a great training treat, that you can also buy fresh in the grocery store to feed at home.
These are good sources of omega 3 fatty acids, which are responsible for keeping your dog’s coat healthy and shiny, as well as supporting your dog’s immune system. A great treat for a dog as long as they are not lactose intolerant, which a small percentage are.
High in calcium and protein, but make sure to only choose yogurts that do not contain artificial sweeteners or added sugars. This is a great source of soluble fiber, which can be especially beneficial for older dogs with bowel irregularity issues. Fresh cranberries have many health benefits and provide vitamins A, B1, B2 and C, and prevent urinary tract infections. Can be a special treat for your dog. In small amounts, pineapple is beneficial for your dog. This herb has long been thought to improve "doggie breath", so next time you are baking treats for your dog, try adding a few tablespoons of chopped parsley for added flavor and color.
This is one of the most promising cancer prevention foods and can be found in your spice rack. This is a type of algae that is high in protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, it makes an ideal addition to a healthy diet. You've likely heard that you're never supposed to feed a dog chocolate, and there's a reason for that. While this fruit is nutritious for you, it's toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. The type of grape or raisin doesn't seem to matter, and the amount consumed may be a single serving of raisins or a pound or more of grapes.
Some clinical signs are vomiting and jittery (hyperactive) behavior are seen immediately to within the first 24 hours after ingestion. Garlic and onions of all forms -- powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated -- can destroy a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxin called persin that can cause upset stomach and breathing difficulties.
Even drinking a small amount of alcohol can result in significant intoxication for a dog, which can lead to vomiting, seizures and even death. Caffeine in large enough quantities can be fatal for a dog, and it is said there is no antidote. Dogs should not eat macadamia nuts or foods containing macadamia nuts because they can be fatal. Eating too much salt can cause excessive thirst and urination and lead to sodium ion poisoning. My dogs (2 Aussies and a Boston) love veggies, they like them cooked a little rather than raw.
Good article, but the title makes it sound like eliminating the bra is more terrifying than having breast cancer. Well, with the drizzly rain that we had all day today darkness fell earlier than ever, and I am sure that many of us are thinking of a night in front of a lovely log fire or wood burning stove.
It seems incredible that a couple of months ago the heat danger was coming from the sun….Please spare a thought for all the dogs at the SPA tonight.
The main news today was that the litter of border collies who arrived at the SPA in early October is finally available for adoption.
To quote the US Border Collie Club (USBCC), “while some people have no difficulty controlling the dogs’ herding instinct, high energy and quick minds, less-skilled owners may be frustrated by these traits. This last sentence should be changed to “An honest appraisal of your lifestyle, skills and needs before getting a Border Collie can save you AND YOUR DOG from heartache”. Elsewhere other volunteers were answering online queries, advising people what to do with the dogs they had found and generally doing as much as possible to help dogs everywhere. Luckily there are some hardy souls out there, and today saw the adoption of two lucky dogs, who are going to be indoors as of now! Recently, however, demands for a lower fat product have resulted in the sugar in some brands of peanut butter being replaced with Xylitol, which is poisonous to dogs (though not to humans). A dog that has eaten an item containing Xylitol can be rapidly hit by a dangerous drop in blood sugar that causes weakness, lethargy, loss of coordination, collapse, and seizures. When our ex spa dogs do well we love to share their stories and congratulate their proud owners and tonight congratulations go to Jane and Zelda, Nikki and Shadow! Shadow, who was adopted by Nikki  just over year ago was a bit of a chunky monkey and was seriously overweight when he left us.
If you have one of our doggies and would like it to be in our facebook advent calendar, please send us a photo by the end of Novemeber. Over the past couple of days we have had some success in finding owners of two recent and elderly arrivals.
Both dogs were identified, but as the attached photo illustrates, sometimes tattoos are not easy to decipher.
Finally we would also like everyone to spare a thought for Diesel, the anti-terrorist dog who was killed this morning in Paris.
Cantaloupe: Source for vitamins A, B complex, C, plus fiber, beta-carotene, potassium, magnesium, thiamine, niacin, pantothenic acid and folic acid. Oranges: Source for fiber, potassium, calcium, folic acid, iron, flavonoids, phytonutrients, vitamins A, C, B1 and B6.
Pears: Source for fiber, folic acid, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, copper, pectin and vitamins A, C, E, B1 and B2. Pumpkin: Source for fiber, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, zinc, iron, potassium and Vitamin A.
Strawberries: Source for fiber, potassium, magnesium, iodine, folic acid, omega-3 fats, vitamins C, K, B1 and B6. Feed fruits to your dog as a small training treat or stuff your dog’s favorite treat stuffer toy with some peanut butter and fruit for a great and healthy occupier. Although some fruits in small portions can be good for your dog (unless your dog is allergic), never offer your dog the following.
Lemon tree: The lemon tree (Citrus limonia) is toxic to dogs, cats and horses due to its psoralens and essential oils. Coconut: While coconut is safe for your dog, it does contain tryglicerides that may cause bloating and discomfort.
Here are some additional sources for everyone that can help you make decisions on what you should or should not give your pets and why. Not because I disagree with it, but because we have known for quite some time that processed meats and low-quality red meats can increase risk of cancer and other diseases.

A lot of people feel that dogs should not be given any "people" food, however, if you’d like to reward your pet with table scraps, you actually can safely, just make sure that you choose people foods that aren't harmful for canines. This substance helps fight and destroy viruses and various pathogenic bacteria, thus protecting your pets from infection and boosting their immune systems. Virgin coconut oil means that it is unrefined, and it can be used for both dogs and humans. These are carcinogenic, cancer-causing substances shown to be toxic to the liver, and are known to cause liver cancer in laboratory animals.
The lowest amounts were found in the big supermarket brands such as Peter Pan, Jif and Skippy.
These are one of the most toxic food substances today, due to the highly toxic process that makes foods more stable, and sit on shelves for a long time.
So if you are going to buy peanut butter, at the very least, make sure it’s raw and doesn’t contain hydrogenated fats. But of course, you still may have to deal with the aflatoxins. It kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, gum disease and cavities, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, and other diseases.  It also kills fungi and yeasts that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot, thrush, diaper rash, and other infections, and even kills tapeworms, lice, giardia, and other parasites. Feed your dog cooked salmon, add salmon oil to food, or slip them some of your unwanted fish skins. Tuna may be a classic cat snack. Eggs are also a source of easily digestible riboflavin and selenium, making them a healthy snack. Yogurts with active bacteria can act as a probiotic and are good for your dog’s digestive system. All of these ingredients are safe for dogs, so any variety of pasta should be fine but I lean toward whole grain pasta. Although it’s probably best to hold the commercial pasta sauce, as these are usually acidic, and contain a lot of sugar and salt, which can upset your dog’s tummy. It makes a great low calorie treat, contains potassium as well as the bone-building minerals phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium. Strawberries, blueberries, apples, cantaloupe, watermelon and bananas are all great choices. Therefore, you don’t want to simply toss a whole pear to a dog and watch him go to town, because he may get sick.
Cinnamon has been long used to cure nausea and gas, and has been used to boost energy, circulation, digestion and brain health.
Not only does carob not contain caffeine or the theobromine that makes chocolate so deadly for dogs, but it actually has many healthy properties.
That delicious candy contains caffeine-like stimulants known as methylxanthines. Chocolate also contains theobromine, a naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle.
It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog.
Diarrhea may also be seen, and the vomitus and feces may contain partially digested grapes or raisins. After 24 hours, the dog may be come anorexic, lethargic and depressed.
Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, fits, and bleeding. Symptoms of too much salt include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, and seizures. Usually they eat the veggies before they eat the kibble, what I can’t find is how much I should be feeding them of the fruits and veggies suggested per day. He didn’t want the dog before, does not want him now, and is clearly not the most skilled at finding a suitable new owner!
This little lad arrived at the start of the month, and the vet estimated his date of birth as being the start of January. This little boy is only just out of puppyhood himself, and as you can probably guess, he arrived at the SPA at Hallowe’en.
Often this is the case, but there have been instances of dogs becoming dehydrated and even suffering burns from the build-up of heat. This dog had been brought to the SPA on 13th November by a woman who had seen him alone and starving in a field close to her home. She found a neighbour who was looking for a dog, and once the pound time had been completed and castration carried out, off went Toby to his new home. However as our friends from Borderline collie wish to remind everyone, this breed is not for everyone, so please do your research before contacting us (or the SPA directly) about an adoption. They will be uploaded to the Facebook page and hard copies printed out to grace the kennels at the refuge itself to help the visitors with their choice. Yesterday Sacripan left for his new home, after the association had carried out adequate home checks. In Carcassonne we have gone from blazing blue skies and t-shirts to stormy winds and icy rain in the space of 24 hours. She was just one year old, so it is great that she didn’t have too long to wait for a home. Tonight, as we hunker down for the evening, we spare a thought for the dogs who are out in the cold but also a happy sigh for those, who like us, are sheltered from the elements.
On the other hand the fact that these things are bad for them stops me having to share my chocolate!
She settled well but was a wee bit timid and easily spooked.  To help her gain confidence Jane took her to CECA dog training club in Azille, which is run by Shirley, one of our volunteers! It was pure coincidence that we had the arrival of two elderly ladies, Bogart, a 14 year old border collie and Plume, a 16 year old tiny cross breed, who was deaf and blind.
At the SPA we are big fans of this form of identification, as, unlike with a microchip, anyone finding a dog can see immediately that he is identified.
And luckily Carole is patient enough to try all the necessary permutations before being able to shout BINGO! Not only will your dog love that he is getting "human food,” but you will love that the same benefits fruits provide us – aids in digestion, antioxidants, immunity boosts, better eye sight, healthier skin and hair – they also provide for your dog. Note: Although you can feed your dog pumpkin seeds, most recommend feeding them to dogs unsalted, roasted and then grounded. Try mashing it into their food or adding it as an ingredient when you make homemade dog treats. The ACPCA list includes both foods and plants and tells you which are toxic to your pets.Fredrika I'm not sure what book your vet gave you but from all the searches I have done strawberries are fine for dogs.
My boxer loves grapes but I got lucky and found out how bad they were before they could hurt her. Sodium nitrite, which is in most hot dogs, lunch meat, and other processed meats, is a cancer-causing ingredient that the USDA has been trying to ban since the 1970s. Hence why I don’t get the ‘new’ report.
Most herbs and spices contain phytochemicals, natural chemical compounds that occur in plans, which can stimulate the immune system and help protect against disease. Broccoli, cabbage, kale, and other vegetables also contain antioxidants, as well as selenium–a mineral that protects against cell damage and promotes detoxification.
Additionally, coconut contains albumin, which is a water-soluble protein found in many animal tissues and liquids. Not only is it a good source of protein, but it also contains heart healthy fats, vitamin B, niacin, and vitamin E.
Hydrogenation is the process of taking a plant oil, adding a nickel catalyst, heating it, and then removing the nickel catalyst.
Meat is also a great source of B vitamins (Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine, and Cobalamine). But despite stereotypes, dogs can eat tuna too, and it’s healthy offering protein, vitamins on top of the omega-3 fatty acids. Opt for low or reduced fat varieties and don’t overfeed, as many cheeses can be high in fat. Also, keep in mind that some dogs are allergic to wheat, so if that's the case, leave pasta off the menu. Brown rice is a little higher in protein & fiber and a little lower in fat when compared to white rice.
There are so many dog treats on the market that we often overlook the simple, healthy, and reasonably priced treats available at our grocery store.

Be sure to remove the seeds. Zucchini like other squashes makes for a delicious and healthy snack, providing potassium, folate and vitamin content make it healthy for you and your dog, and no part of this vegetables is toxic to canines. It has protein, soluble fiber, Vitamins C, E and all the B vitamins, and minerals such as zinc and copper.
Make sure to take out the seeds and the core before feeding to your dog, as these can be choking hazards. It’s a better idea to cut a pear up and feed the pieces to your dog while throwing the core away. Your dog can eat pineapple to boost its immune system and improve digestion. Bromelain, found in pineapple is an enzyme that helps decompose protein which is very important to a dog. It does this by acting as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and by encouraging cancer cell death.
In many experiments based both on animals and humans, it was found that spirulina supported heart health by lowering the amount of fat in the blood, as well as lowering inflammation. The maximum dose should be 1 to 2 tablespoons for a 45 lb (20 kg) dog.
While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs. If ingested in large amounts, chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, seizures and even death. My dog has been given chicken and steak scraps that were seasoned with garlic and onion powder, making him sick for a full day. In addition to tea and coffee - including beans and grounds -- caffeine can be found in cocoa, chocolate, colas, and stimulant drinks such as Red Bull.
Symptoms of poisoning include muscle tremors, weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters, vomiting, elevated body temperature, and rapid heart rate. That can cause your dog's blood sugar to drop and can also cause liver failure that can occur within just a few days.
But hold on; the phone number did not answer, and the owner lived a long way away from where the dog was found. Still luckily we all have different ideas of beauty, and many people prefer their borders with the more traditional colours. And as he is not identified, his owners have ten days to reclaim him (and pay for him to be identified).
A trip to the mairie and the vet brought no joy; the dog is not identified, nor is her owner looking for her as far as could be seen. If your dog is particularly thin or has short fur, the temptation for him to hog the area in front of the fire might be even greater, so maybe it is worth investing in a warm coat for him. Since their arrival they have been together in the warm, and have had nothing but the best of care.
In pet environments, with experienced dog people who give them the structure, love, and fellowship they crave, they can be superb pets. This boy needed an enclosed garden, and knowing this, there is no way that the association would let him leave until this most essential of requirements had been met. We don’t often have dogs of this breed at the SPA, they are very distinctive with their beautiful brindle coats and delicate features. Slightly reserved at first, Micheline benefited hugely from sharing her box with a more confident dog, and although it took her longer to be adopted than many of us expected, at least she is safe and warm in a loving home tonight.
Many of us use Kongs filled with this tasty spread to amuse our dogs when we are out for long periods of time. On Zelda’s fist day at club I went along too, just to visit and was amazed to see about half a dozen ex spa dogs that day!
This is not as easy as it sounds, especially as Shadow was a dog who really enjoyed his food….any food! Dogs really are man’s best friend, and sometimes they too lay down their life for reasons that must be even more incomprehensible to them than they are to us. Do not feed your dog any other part of the pumpkin due to the small, sharp hairs on the pumpkin stem and leaves. You can also use fruit juice, but make sure it is 100 percent fruit juice and not added sugars. That’s because foods with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils contain trans fat, which are known to cause cancer, heart disease, and other health problems. If the bacon is cured in sugar and contaminated with dextrose then it most definately is dangerous. This results in a highly toxic fat that causes diabetes, heart disease and chronic inflammation. If the peanut butter you buy contains trans fats, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredients don’t buy it!
These vitamins are involved in energy metabolism in the body. Meat also makes a good meal replacement if you’re in a pinch and out of dog food. Cottage cheese is typically a good choice because it is high in protein and calcium and it’s fairly bland, so it can be a good way to add some extra protein to your dog’s diet. White or instant rice is an easily digestible carbohydrate which makes it a good source of energy which is especially good when feeding an older dog. It also contains some lesser-known sterols and chlorophyll, which have been investigated for their effects on regulating metabolism. Although there are no studies in dogs that prove a clear cancer preventive function, there are many studies done in other species and with cells that clearly demonstrate curcumin’s efficacy against cancer cells. I recognized what was wrong and fed him Annie Chun's Seaweed Snacks. He loves them and they stopped his symptoms. When he was finally contacted, he informed us that he had given Fizz away, and did not know to whom. A stray spark could set fire to rugs and pose a danger to both you and your pet, so a decent fire guard is a good investment. Toby could have spent a long time with us, as adoptions are not exactly in full flow at the moment, especially when it comes to big dogs. Finally they are ready for their new homes, and it is expected that they will leave quickly. First of all this morning Carole (who is both employee and volunteer), uploaded an urgent appeal looking for a home for gorgeous six year old Nude, who has leishmaniosis and who cannot live in the cold of a refuge in the winter. Chewing can relieve anxiety levels and prevent pooches from chewing on other less disposable objects.
The compound doesn’t affect glucose levels in people, but when ingested by dogs it can cause a dangerous surge of insulin. Coconut & coconut oil can also balance your dog’s metabolism, and keep weight under control.
While I have not heard of any dogs having an issue with peanut butter, I will share what I have found.
Nori has some beneficial effects on fat metabolism, immune function and anti-tumor response.
In essence from the dogs increased ability to digest, he is able to absorb more essential elements from the food that he consumes. The symptoms of anemia include weakness, vomiting, little interest in food, dullness, and breathlessness. The legal limit the SPA has to keep dogs prior to allowing them to be adopted is 10 days, so they have been more than patient in this instance. The 10 days then give enough time for the SPA to contact the owners and for them to come in and collect their dog. An honest appraisal of your lifestyle, skills and needs before getting a Border Collie can save you from heartache”. I know from our many chats that Eline of Animal Trust was really looking forward to meeting Mojo, and although she was confident that he would be homed quickly, I think even she thought it would take more than a week! Coconut & its oil are also something that your dog will most likely love to eat, and gobble up. Nori does not have a strong odor or flavor, and the paper-thin sheets can be torn and soaked in broth, then added to food, or just added dry. While this may not be directly relatable to dogs, it does show that only a small amount should be required.
