Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Personal protection puppy training
In the past 10 years there has been a dramatic increase in importation of pet food from China. One of the biggest concerns now for pet owners is feeding their pets a healthy diet that is safe. A dog’s or cat’s kidneys and liver are forced to work overtime to process the build-up of toxins ingested with corn and soy. Beware of the 4-D’s(dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter)which are in unspecified by-products. I have also pictured two examples of dog treats, purchased at a large pet food chain store, that have ingredients you want to stay away from. Certain dog food brands that were considered high quality, such as Iams, Canidea and Eukanuba, no longer are because they have been bought out by large corporations that changed sources and reformulated the product because they are more interested in making money than keeping their sources and ingredients safe and protecting the welfare of our beloved pets. Personally, I will not take the risk of my dogs being “the guinea pigs” for discovering a dog food has been contaminated, so I stay away from treats and foods made by these corporations. One way to ensure control over the ingredients in your dog’s food is to prepare meals yourself. When introducing a new food to your dog, who is otherwise healthy with a healthy gut, use the new food as a treat for the day, and keep an eye on the condition of the stool. Slowly start to replace a tiny portion of the existing food with an equally small portion of the raw food (typically 75% old food, 25% new food) and continue this until your dog’s system has made the adjustment and has solid stool. For dog’s who seem to be suffering from digestive confusion, to help, you can feed the kibble at one meal time and the raw for the other.
Every time you purchase a Life's Abundance product, a portion of the profits are contributed to a fund that supports the operations of this organization. You want the best pet food for your dog, but that's not easy when marketing and economics get in the way of what's healthful for your pet. There are plenty of natural preservatives used in pet foods, such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (mixed tocopherols), and rosemary. Once this Frankenstein concoction is compiled, it is heated extensively to remove any pathogens that might be there (they most definitely are). There aren't many ingredients that get as much buzz in the press as gluten does these days. A California man claims in a lawsuit that Purina's Beneful dry dog food (not pictured) killed his dog and possibly thousands of others.
A recent study - 1400 man-hours - by a group of researchers and dog experts who consulted dog owners across the country has revealed what could really be good and bad for your canine friends.
One of the revealing points of the study is the dog food ingredients that pet owners must take note of in canned and other commercially-produced dog food. The study also pointed out that what are at times good for human companions may not necessarily be good for canines. Pet owners must also take note of the individual nutritional needs of their pet dogs, which are usually based on the canine's health, exercise level, age and medical condition. It is not affiliated with any company, and teaches you how to read labels, what ingredients to avoid, and breaks down many different brands of dog foods and how they compare. Large corporations are taking over small dog food companies and changing formulations and the sources where they buy their ingredients because they have one goal in mind: minimize internal costs and maximize profit. They are NOT species appropriate food for dogs and cats and   in the USA and Canada corn and soybeans are almost all grown from Genetically Modified (GM) seeds (shame on Monsanto and our government!). So higher levels are present in most commercial dog and cat food that contains corn and or soy (and other animal feed as well). Items with a red arrow pointing at them are “red flag” ingredients (though most of the ingredients in these treats are bad, including the one marked with a yellow arrow). Learn what ingredients to stay away from (anything corn or soy, propylene glycol, BHA and BHT, Ethoxyquin, Propyl Gallate, Gallic Acid or Propyl Ester, any bi-product meal is a great place to start). Besides the fact that kibble is not truly species appropriate and isn’t completely free of unnecessary ingredients or carcinogenic free, I have yet to find a dog kibble that is nutritionally complete. But not all dogs have the efficient GI tract and can tolerate such a dramatic change without incident. Give your dog a small piece in between meals, and slowly, over the course of a week, increase the new food treat and monitor.
You will over time make the kibble meal smaller and the raw meal larger until your dog has made the transition to fully raw meals. That’s why we have worked very hard to not only provide the best, health-promoting products, we have also established a foundation to help improve the lives of abandoned companion animals all across the U.S.

You can't trust the brands themselves, as pet food companies use tricks to make their food appear better than it actually is. While all of these ingredients are legal to put in dog food in Canada, they've been outlawed in many countries, and are just not worth the risk.
The problem with white flour is that it causes a spike and then drop in blood sugar, causing you (or your dog) to be hungry again soon after consuming it.
These ingredients are always the leftovers, and the only guarantee is that there is no guarantee on any standard of quality. Plenty of chicken, beef, or pork in your pet's food, would elimate the need for flavour enhancers. While many people are eschewing gluten to improve their digestion and even lose weight, your dog's reasons for avoiding gluten may be even more compelling.
In dog food, gluten can be found in any gluten-containing grain, such as wheat, corn, or oats.
Read more on what was recently discovered as the healthy food ingredients for your canine friends. Food ingredients that should be avoided for your pets include onions, garlic, avocado, corn, wheat, soy and beet pulp.
Unfortunately, this means that many companies use ingredients that are unfit for use in the human foods they produce, so they use them for ingredients in their pet foods. The long term affect of ingesting GM food is not known, though some studies are linking GM corn to cause the growth of tumors. And for training, treats can be a huge motivator for dogs which makes positive reinforcement training much easier.
Or cook some chicken or beef for your dog, cut it into bite-sized pieces and store it in ziplock bags in your freezer. If you feed your dog a brand of food that is owned by a large corporation (and there are some, small companies that are subsidiaries of these large companies, so be careful!), then you will constantly have to check the news and websites for recalls. Life’s Abundance (both wet and dry) is veterinarian formulated, privately owned, and the food is processed in a small USFDA approved facility. It can be very confusing to create a recipe that is fully balanced with all the vitamins and minerals your dog needs and the correct balance of fat, protein and fiber. Start with a 75% old, 25% new kibble mix and feed for a couple days to see how your dog’s digestive systems reacts and adjusts.
Kibble is broken down like a starch while raw foods are broken down as a protein and remain in the stomach for an acid bath.
The package and the commercials can be misleading, but the ingredient list offers a more truthful look at what's actually in your dog's food. Check your dog food ingredient label to make sure it's not harbouring one of these common, but potentially harmful dog food ingredients. The ingredients can be diseased, from dead animals, from expired meat sections in grocery stores (complete with plastic packaging), or even include tumours – you name it. The result is a difficult to digest, nutritionally-void filler that boosts the protein percentage on your dog food bag, but adds little usable protein for your pet. In pet foods (as well as human foods) it is used to make up for the lack of flavour in low-quality ingredients. Grain-free dog foods include vegetable sources of carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, putting often heavily-refined grains in the (figurative) dog house. I have done some research and found some horrific stories about sources for ingredients in dog foods and treats.
But, it is important to be aware of what is in the treats you give your dog and make sure that they are safe. It has more moisture and fewer carbs, but some dogs’ systems can’t handle the richness of the food and handle kibble better. Learn to spot “profit first” dog food companies and don’t take labels such as “premium” “natural” “gourmet” and even “organic” for granted.
Goat sources are best, especially if your dog is lactose intolerant, but you can also purchase cow kefir or yogurt.
It has been found that many home-made meals lack the proper amount of vitamins and minerals for good health, even when made from recipes in books written by veterinarians. And unfortunately, Therapy Dogs International made a rule that won’t allow raw fed dogs to be therapy dogs because of the risk of bacteria transmission from dog to patient.
The most important thing to remember is to take slow and at a pace where your dog’s system can keep up in building the proper bacteria and digestive balance to handle the switch.

The acids required to digest raw meat are much stronger that what is required to digest cooked food. Once all is normal, then continue the replacement process over the span of several weeks until the old food is completely replaced by the raw food.
Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation is a non-profit organization absolutely committed to supporting a variety of animal rescue groups, all of which are dedicated to helping to rescue neglected and unwanted animals.
You might even want to check your food, as some of these ingredients can be found in people food as well. Meat is another one of those non-descript food items that will keep cropping up in this list of bad dog food ingredients. So many dogs have become ill or have died due to tainted treats and treats loaded with pesticides, toxins and other contaminants.
And contrary to some beliefs, giving your dog people food will not teach him to beg - you do that by rewarding your dog with food when he does that behavior. If you choose to take this route, be sure to check your recipes with a dog nutritionist, since not all veterinarians are nutritionists and know about how to make nutritionally balanced home-made meals. But, feeding your dog a raw, species appropriate diet can have many health benefits over prepared commercial and home cooked foods. Giving you dog a good prebiotic and probiotic daily for a week before transitioning will help.
Learn to read labels and look at the ingredients list and stay away from treats with bad ingredients or that are made with food sources from China (which is not always as easy to find out). Food is food, and if your dog is hungry or smells something yummy, you will have his attention. Contrary to the labels on dog food packaging saying they have healthy ingredients of probiotic and omega-3 fatty acids, these do not survive the cooking process and become non-viable, nor can they be preserved if added later.
Veterinary and prescription pet foods are just as bad, and contain low-quality ingredients just like the other brands. Nutritionists can be expensive, but they will help you to devise recipes that are healthy and fully balanced for your dog’s particular needs. Fewer dogs have weight problems or severe dental issues because their raw diet is low in carbohydrates. Once your dog is doing well with this, increase the new food and phase out the old over time and at a rate that your dog responds well to. If, at any point your dog shows signs of digestive problems (vomiting or diarrhea), slow down your rate of exchange, you are transitioning to fast.
Below is a list of treats that are known to cause illness in dogs, but there are plenty of other treats out there that are just as bad, so READ THE LABELS! Therefore, if you feed your dog kibble, you will need to add these fatty acids and probiotics. A great book to help get you started is Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs: The Definitive Guide to Homemade Meals by Lew Olson, PhD.
This will be different from dog to dog, and will depend on what the dog was eating before and the overall health of the dog.
Learn how to read pet food labels and ingredients lists and know what ingredients you want to stay away from.
Be sure to have your dog’s raw diet consist of about 45% meaty bone, 40% muscle meat, and 15% organ. You can also add lightly steamed vegetables and fruit that you blend into a puree or finely chop to make digestion easier. Contrary to some raw sites, your domestic dog is not a domestic wolf, and feral and Pariah dogs do eat fruits and vegetables when they can.
There are reputable companies, butchers and small farms that are privately owned that sell raw foods for dogs and make prepared raw diets for dogs. There are also “for profit” companies jumping on the band wagon and making their own raw foods, but not without recalls due to contamination.
