Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Personal protection puppy training
Going to the bathroom inside – Finally, going to the bathroom inside is a puppy behavior that must be modified. Destructive chewing is one of the most common behavioral issues in our canine companions, and there are several possible causes for this behavior.
If your dog is taking out it's excess energy on your house slippers, your dog might be chewing out of boredom.
Last, but not least, if the chewing behavior happens while you are out of the house, your dog may have separation anxiety. Separation anxiety, boredom, puppyhood teething, and natural instinct are all possible triggers for this behavior, and each one has a different approach for correction. You can combat this behavior by rethinking your play strategy - take longer walks, and schedule in more time for one-on-one play sessions with your pet. Direct your dog's attention away from the couch cushions and on to safe options - such as edible chewies and rubber toys. As with any type of behavior you wish to change, one of the most important things to do is manage the environment. If your dog attempts to chew on an inappropriate item while in your presence, simply interrupt the behavior and re-direct him to an appropriate chew toy.
Exercise is vitally important for dogs prone to inappropriate chewing or other destructive behaviors.

Occasionally chewing or tearing things up is a symptom of a more serious problem, such as separation anxiety. A few training books are still on the market that advocate inhumane methods for stopping destructive behaviors, such as putting duct tape around a pet’s mouth or physically hitting a dog. Chewing or tearing things up (like paper) can also be a displacement behavior, a way to release pent-up energy or stress. For example, spray items with Bitter Apple spray or Boundary dog repellant, or use a Scat Mat at the edge of a countertop, to stop counter surfers. This particular puppy behavior is short lived and once their adult teeth have come in, simply providing them with bones and chew toys will give them the outlet they need. But we often forget that many adult dogs need the same type of management to keep them out of trouble.
Many pups have certain times of day when they are more likely to chew, so you can head this behavior off at the pass if you choose this time of day to give the dog an approved chewie. This type of training operates on the same principle as a child touching a hot stove – if something is particularly unpleasant, most likely the child or the dog will make the decision not to repeat that behavior. In fact, it is these endorphins that are stimulated by chewing, so if your dog is not getting enough exercise, he may unconsciously be seeking to replace needed endorphins by releasing pent-up energy through chewing. The use of proper management (for instance, crating a dog when he is not under your direct supervision), along with proper exercise, takes care of 99 percent of destructive behavior problems.

Separation AnxietyIf your dog gets upset when you leave, teach him that you'll always come back. Then teach him to lie down, and stay when you say, "Go to your spot." That will help your dog stay calm and give him something to do while he waits to be greeted. Always watch for signs that your dog is uncomfortable and then do what you can to make her feel better. If your dog is aggressive, work with a professional trainer or your vet to learn how to teach your dog to rely on you in a healthy way. Never leave an aggressive dog alone with children or unfamiliar adults, even if you think he's not likely to hurt anyone.
If your dog learns to sit before doing something fun like going for a walk, she learns to control her impulses.
