Diet is the most significant healing factor when it comes to ridding your body of candida albicans.
If you cheat or eat sugar or any of the other foods in any form, the candida can quickly get a hold again and you won’t be able to kill it off effectively. Still if you keep 6 weeks in mind as a starting point, if it turns out you have to keep going longer, by then you will be in a good routine and will find it easy to do. Fermented foods – including kombucha, saukraut, and other fermented foods like sourdough, soy sauce, miso, sauces, condiments.
It may seem like you have to exclude loads of foods but there are still loads of foods to enjoy, it’s just that most of the food has to be prepared from real whole foods. There’s plenty of foods to choose from and I will be sharing some recipes in future posts. If you are currently with candida yourself, don’t lose hope, just do what you need to do and things will change. This got me to thinking… almost all of the literature out there will treat candida as devil-spawn and the fastest way to an early death.

All that said, those who have many autoimmune diseases on top of vitamin deficiencies (like animia) should be tested for Celiac or Gluten sensitivity. Diet is a very important part of assisting your body in eliminating Candida albicans (or yeast).
Foods low in carbohydrates includes protein foods such as meat, turkey, chicken, fish, shellfish, and some nuts. All types of yeast and yeast-containing foods place additional burden on the body which is already coping with yeast overload. These nuts usually have high mold contamination which again overloads the body yeast burden.
REMINDER: If foods on the restricted list are not food sensitivities for you they should still only be used infrequently and in small amounts. Because fat metabolism is often impaired when Candida is a problem, fats and oils should be carefully tested and consumed in minimal amounts (e.g. Vegetable oils that have been cold-pressed without heat (usually available in health food stores) are your best choices.
A final reminder that this is a temporary condition that CAN be brought under control with persistence and patient care!!!
For most people, a total of 2-3 months, moving from the most strict to a more relaxed stage of the diet, is usually sufficient to clear up the symptoms and return them to their normally healthy state. I do know that my case is highly atypical (lucky me!). The bottom line seems to be that it’s okay if you can tolerate it, if you can keep consumption moderate, and if you use organic, unsweetened chocolate or cacao. On the other hand (and there is always another hand!), I’ve read that polyphenols in the black tea are anti-fungal.

I have never been diagnosed as gluten intolerant, but I’m off gluten as part of the candida protocol. This is just a comment for those of you struggling with candida for longer than 6 months, I would recommend looking into whether you are dealing with higher than normal levels of heavy metals, in particular mercury. You’re mentioned that you followed Stage One of the diet without any deviation from the list of recommended foods. I have been trying to start an anti-candida diet for three months, and am having a difficult time eliminating caffeine.

You have to starve them out and this requires VERY STRICT adherence to a diet that excludes all the foods that feed the bacteria. This is probably the biggest obstacle to get around because it requires a HUGE shift in mindset to accept that you will not be able to eat certain things, at least for a while. The only sweetener you can have is stevia in small amounts but it’s still best to avoid all forms for the first 6 weeks.
Though these are beneficial for the gut, they are not great for candida initially due to the sugar content and are best avoided. It may seem a bit overwheleming at first but it is possible and the food is still delicious. So if you’re currently facing the challenge of having to follow a candida diet, foods are still enjoyable to eat even though it looks like you have to cut many food items out. Cutting out all those sugars and processed foods also usually causes a detox reaction and you don’t want to make it worse initially by taking antifungals as well. My motto is: “YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH” because there is nothing in this world that makes us more wealthy than having good health. Dieting does to candida essentially the same thing that mowing the grass does for your yard.. Sure you can slow it’s growth back via healthy fungi-types and bacterial colonies (probiotics, raw foods, etc), but the candida will eventually plow through these and just come back. There are many foods you can still eat and if you are creative enough can make a great many things. I’m not a doctor but a nutritionist and have years of experience in the field of health and wellness. A combination of diet and the right supplements can and does eliminate candida and get you healthy again. I use this type of eating plan with clients for all types of things besides candida and it works effectively well. I’m wondering about squashes and pumpkins and tomatoes and things that are technically fruits, but thought of as vegetables.
I would also like to add that people with Celiac Disease often suffer from stubborn Candida issues. It is unfortunate that gluten free is seen as a fad, but it really does benefit most people to cut it out, or at least cut it down. The following recommendations have been compiled from recent research in the field and are made as a guide to assist you in making helpful food choices for yourself.
Remember, some foods like highly refined and processed products or those containing chemical additives and preservatives (such as white sugar, white flour, soda pop, coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate, etc.) you’re simply better off without!
Fresh fruit and their juices (freshly squeezed juice where possible) that are not food sensitivities for you may be consumed occasionally in small amounts, as long as the recommended daily carbohydrate total is not exceeded. Therefore only those that you are not sensitive to should be consumed and, again, only occasionally in small amounts keeping within the daily carbohydrate total.
Some research indicates that sesame and corn oil (cold-pressed) are the most useful in the treatment of Candida albicans. For that reason, the diet we include in the book offers different variations so that people can adapt the diet to what suits them best. Most will suggest that you cannot follow a vegetarian diet and effectively fight off candida yeast; they recommend animal sources of protein along with a careful recommendation to delve into the sources of your protein so that the animals were humanely raised and slaughtered.
When you’re on a vegan diet, sources of complete protein are limited, and tofu fits that bill. Being someone that’s been there myself, I have created loads of delicious candida recipes. Diet is only one component in a 4 pronged approach to removing candida that I have found to work with myself and clients. I went to the doctor’s to be tested for Candida and left with her strongly urging me to get checked for Celiac due to other symptoms such as psoriosis, eczema, skin rashes, animia, thyroid cancer (And the list goes on. That is how fad diets begin actually and is the reason that I never looked further into this issue. When reintroducing foods into your diet you should also take care not to emphasize those that feed the yeast or stress your immune system for a considerable period of time, even though you may be craving those foods and they may not produce noticeable symptoms right away.
Furthermore, studies have shown that people who exercise develop fewer illnesses and are less apt to have accidents. I never (never, never, never) consume sugar, maple syrup, Sucanat or other high glycemic sweeteners, sweet dried fruits, tropical fruits, gluten, alcohol, fungus-laden foods such as mushrooms or peanuts, or yeasts of any kind. Since then, we’ve discovered that agave contains a fairly high level of fructose, which can be hard on the liver. According to some other anti-candida diets, however, fermented products can trigger yeast reactions because of their chemical similarity to yeasts. On the other hand, the Body Ecology diet recommends eating lots of fermented foods. Any fermentation involves sugars, and fermented foods in general tend to trigger candida symptoms. I wouldn’t have even tried black tea at the beginning, but now that I’ve been more or less stable for a year or so, I might be willing to try a cup of black tea and see if I have any reaction.
I have been having a very difficult time keeping it under control and am happy to see that you have been successful. My sister and her daughter have celiac and her other daughter is gluten intolerant, so I’m well aware of non-wheat food. But I was recently diagnosed with Candida by an alternative practitioner with muscle testing or applied kinesiology! I’m a little concerned, though, that this diet is a bit too much like the Atkins diet, even though WA does recommend that individuals use their diet rules as they see fit. The meal plans really do help make the diet a lot more interesting for you, and much easy to follow and overcome candida. As you have correctly stated, it is surely not the entire story but it is critically important. Anyway, if you have a consistent yeast issue (For me, I can remember back to age 3 having yeast rashes, which my mother put cornstarch on…THAT was helpful, not!) you may want to look deeper into Celiac Disease. I did hear, although not officially and did not do my research, that a no gluten diet was helpful for psoriosis.
The media really does a disservice to the public by sensationalizing everything they possibly can, especially when it comes to food.
The Candida Diet is probably the most involved step on your road to recovery, and it will probably require a major shift in your shopping and eating habits but the long term benefits far outweigh the effort required to conform to the diet.
In our upcoming book, Living Candida-Free, Andrea Nakayama has devised an extensive questionnaire that can help you assess whether you have a candida overgrowth, and how serious it is. As a result, I’ve changed my mind on agave in the early stages (your liver has enough to contend with at that time!!). Cerevisiae is naturally present on most foods and even in the air (just as candida albicans, the most common source of CRC, is always present in and on our bodies).
Apparently, the process can also generate molds, and even though they are not candida molds per se, they can trigger the same reaction. I have had this problem for over a year now, and this is the 5th doctor I have seen, but the first MD to make any progress with my symptoms.
It also has the bacteria in it that turn sugars, and esp fermented sugars, into vinegar (ie, the same bacteria that turn the apple cider into vinegar in the first place).
Without the diet and cutting back on sugar in particular, you really can’t starve and kill the candida. Many people find after eating strictly within the guidelines for 2-4 weeks, symptoms begin to disappear and they can SLOWLY incorporate whole foods from the restricted list back into their diets. You should work with your holistic healthcare professional or doctor (if you’re lucky enough to have a doctor who believes in candida) to see what is best for you. Recurrence of your symptoms and your overall sense of well-being seem to be useful general guidelines in assessing the rate at which foods may or may not be introduced.
It wasn’t until recently, when I became aware of my issue with Candida (another thing that has been exploited by the media and opportunists), that I realized I had a greater issue. I am sad if I will have to give up my favorites sweets and breads forever…The candida makes sense though.
