Bobcat ultralight, Supercat ultra lite aircraft, all wood plans built ultralights, Ultralight News newsmagazine.
If the OP were willing to consider metal tube fuselage and wooden wings the possibilities grow exponentially. If I were looking to build a 2 place wooden airplane, I'd give strong consideration to the Jodel D19.
Also, though the OP specified wood construction, if I were in his boots I'd at least take a look at aluminum as well. I personally have plans for the Leger Pataplume II, a great plane that still meets European microlight regs. Of the four, the Jodel D.18 is probably easiest to build, the Nicollier Menestrel II prettiest to look at, the Leger Pataplume 2 best for getting in and out of small fields and the PGK-1 Hirondelle best for cross country.
The greatest chance for successful completion of an airplane project comes when you enjoy the building process as much or more than flying.

I think you'll find people that build from scratch don't really do it for the cost savings, they do it because they like the challenges of building. While I would really like a 2-place, the building process is more important than the finished project.
You can make pretty things out of wood with a little more work than it takes to make ugly things. Not practical to have a sleek plane sitting in a hangar and only fly it around the pattern 2x a month.
This will allow you to see first hand what types people are actually building and talk to the owners about their experience with the aircraft. Few of the cheap, simple, low horsepower homebuilts are really suitable for two full size adults, especially as has been commented, among the older designs that were offered as plans. If its a family project or you have a bunch of free time (and very motivated) you can build one of these pretty quickly.
