Wood floor varnish remover, plans to make a adirondack chair, easy small woodworking plans - How to DIY
5Vacuum the floor again and sand it again with a fine sandpaper to smooth out the floor and provide a final touch. When using chemical strippers, work in small, manageable areas, so that you can remove sections of varnish before the chemicals dry. Varnish, lacquer, shellac and other clear coats are applied to protect wood furniture and flooring from scratches, scuff marks, and stains. Shellac and lacquer are alcohol-based finishes, which can be removed with a variety of solvents that are available from your neighborhood hardware store.
In some cases, though, you may want to remove an old varnish to apply a new varnish or refinish your wood floor. If you want to remove just the varnish and not the paint, use a liquid stripper, applied with a paintbrush.
Place the running sander on the ground and move across the room in the direction of the wood grain. You should have no varnish remaining on your wood floor at this point, but if all else fails, heat the floor with an electric paint remover and then scrape it one last time with your scraper. Upon application, the paste-like stripper stays wet for an extended period of time, making it possible to remove multiple layers if necessary. Varnishes are made from powerful solvents, though, and simply applying general cleaning solutions will not remove the coating.
Do not pour the liquid directly onto your floor, as wood is highly sensitive to saturation. Now that you have loosened the varnish with your paint stripper, you can scrape it off using a chemical-resistant scraper blade, or you can wash it away using a damp mop.
Use fine steel wool (#0000) rubbed in the direction of the wood grain to remove any residue. If you want to take on the task yourself, there are multiple methods for stripping varnish from a wood floor. When you reach the wall, return to the center of the room and sand the next section, until you sand the entire wood floor. Only use a gel stripper if you want to remove the varnish as well as the paint, as gel strippers will penetrate deep and remove several layers.
