Welcome to the Woodworkers ClubSince 1996, we have been providing the tools, materials, knowledge, and space to help realize your dreams in wood. Lynn Sheeley’s mystical home carved out of a cottonwood bark using the relief carving style. Jean Gullickson, 61, carving a sailor smoking a pipe on a basswood piece using the relief carving style. When I first heard about a local woodcarving group, I thought it would be fun to tap into a new side of my creativity and along the way find the gem in woodcarving. My creative gift has always been words, so when club member Lynn Sheeley Jr., 92, told me his story of how he got started in woodcarving with no experience in drawing after meeting a woodcarver in Georgia, I knew that I could do it (or at least try).
Sheeley, who teaches woodcarving to beginners, sat by my side and helped me start my project during my recent visit, which as a beginner made me very happy and safe while using knives.
Estero resident Jean Gullickson agreed that the local woodcarving group courses at Estero Community Park and Recreation Center are a hidden gem in Southwest Florida. I'm even thinking that my husband, Francisco, may enjoy the class since he recently built and finished our wood bathroom vanity. When carving the wood, you cut toward your thumb but while wearing a thick thumb guard — so don't fret slicing open your skin, even if you have no experience, like myself. This type of carving is known as "in the round." My fingers seemed to move easily once I had the concept down. In addition, he is a member of the 200-member Caloosa Carvers Club that meets at the Salvation Army Community Center on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.
Instead of starting novices with a square piece of wood, he starts them with a pre-shaped piece of wood.
Sheeley said the reason he started me with the bird was because it gives a beginner a lot of carving experience, making it a good stepping stone to the next project. It's relaxing and then everything else just goes away, including time," said Gullickson, who has been participating in the local class for three years and more than five years at another woodcarving club in Maryland.
Since I'm not a great drawer, I liked that the wooden piece in my bag of supplies had an egret template attached to the piece of wood — this made it much easier for me to start carving away to form a bird.
