I personally do not like painting my carvings but there are circumstances when hint of paint will enhance the carving or when clients insist on having their carvings painted (trust me, I do my best to get those ideas out of their minds – wood is beautiful on its own and in my opinion should not be covered with paint). As Marv leads me through his studio, located in Faribault, MN, I laugh out loud at the smirk on the face of one small wooden man who reclines on his wheelbarrow and, from the corner of his eye, blithely watches his nagging wife stride towards him, her foot just a hair’s breadth from the rake that lies on the ground in front of her. Cranking out carving after carving, Marv's single-mindedness once he gets "fired up" means that it can take him as little as a week to finish a carving if he's undisturbed.
This caricature, titled "Fuddermore!" is Marv's petulant response to my suggestion that one of his carvings perhaps needed an adjustment.
Recently, Marv took his skill at plasticene clay, and began a series of collaborations with me that produced small but charming figurines - caricatures that cram more character and amusement per square inch than many a page of the Variety section.
A lot of us struggle with this part and we all know that bad stain or paint can ruin the best carving. But despite his talents in subversive carving and team sports, Marv chose to make his career from yet another area in which he excels: math.
We are seeking grant writers and museums which collect folk art, Bohemian art, wood carvings or Americana to assist with this project.
I also try to use just very light coat of the paint and try to make sure that the wood is visible under the paint.
Luckily, Marv is as humorous and easy going as the caricatures that he carves, and even the most persistent irritation is forgiven, and even tucked away for use in a future carving.
Most of you probably know about that nice green (on paper) which would look sooooo good on your carving and which would change your wonderful little sculpture into a green plastic toy and no matter what you do, in the best case you can only change it into a brown plastic monster!!!! Every surface is a magnet for carvings, magazines, drawings, tools, books, toys and clay models. And as if that isn’t enough, he is a founding member of the Caricature Carvers of America (CCA), which is dedicated to promoting the art of caricature carving.
