Personally, I'm in love with the trestle table from the Autumn 2006 issue of Woodworking Magazine.
Keith Starosta01-25-2009, 3:11 PMI'm having some trouble determining which way the edge grain should face for the legs on my table. Keith Starosta01-25-2009, 8:08 PMI did some calculations, and it looks like I'm going to come in just under 75 board feet of lumber for this table. This Mahogany trestle dining table gave our manager a workout since this table had to be built in solid Mahogany, lots of time was taken just to glue up all the parts before a single cut could be made. I would like to see the tenons on the legs with a little more room for movement on a piece this wide. I have done trestle type tables in the past and attached the top through counter sunk slots in the top of the legs.
Most wood doesn't come in very thick dimensions so if we want 12" thick trestle legs than we have to create this the old fashion way, one board at a time. Since none of my test subjects were over 6', I bumped the clearance up a bit and set the legs 14" in from the ends.
If you are going to finish the table, both sides of the top should receive the same amount of finish to control moisture absorption and release. This dining table was 96" long and with 2 20" leaves which makes for lots of great entertaining. We build all our extension dining tables with wood tracks that support leaves on the ends of the tables. This table will have some secrets since the base will be finished in a glazed black paint which will hide the solid Mahogany wood beneath.
This is for walnut clips that will screw into the bottom of the table top and set in the dado.
Maybe in a 100 years someone will want to refinish this table and realizes the beautiful material hidden from the world.Detail of the Mahogany dining table top, we used a alcohol stain and gloss lacquer top coat, turned out pretty amazing. I plan on a good snug fit with no glue so the top can expand and contract separate from the base assemblies.
