Here at Wood-Joy we sell genuine teak patio furniture, such as teak dining sets, teak deep seat sofa sets, teak benches, teak chaise loungers and teak accessories throughout the entire USA.
So you may be considering buying teak outdoor furniture, but are somewhat concerned about the maintenance factor. Our company has been selling teak outdoor furniture for many years so we are used to getting this type of phone call, almost daily. NEWLY PURCHASED TEAK - Wipe clean all surfaces of new teak furniture, including the underside of tables with soapy water prior to using new cushions.
First of all, there is not much chance of you seriously damaging your teak furniture by applying teak oil or sealers on the surfaces.
If your furniture is to be used indoors and away from a lot of natural sunlight, over a period of time perhaps six months to a year the wood will gradually become a darker shade of golden brown. If left outdoors, the effects of the sun's rays will 'bleach out' the timber’s natural color, gradually turning it a soft silvery gray patina color. If your teak furniture requires cleaning or if you want to remove the gray, this can be done with a normal household bristle brush and some warm mildly soapy (clear dish soap) water. If the furniture has some extreme stubborn and heavily ingrained stains or mold, these can be removed by first cleaning with the use of Simple Green and a water rinse. TEAK OIL - Teak wood itself has natural oil within requiring no treatment to be used indoors or outdoors.
APPLYING TEAK SEALERS - Teak oil can harbor mold in wet climates, especially if left in the shade. WAIT ON NEW TEAK - If the teak is new, let it set outside in the sun for about 2-4 weeks to acclimate, then apply teak sealers or oils. We recommend to at least surface clean the wood surfaces with soapy (liquid dish soap) water that may be in contact with fabric, i.e.
I have a lovely wooden bench on the porch that I got for free last spring, and it soon became my favorite coffee-sipping seat. Furniture intended for the indoors is never going to have as long an outdoor life as its pressure-treated or rot resistant wood counterparts, but a little protection from the elements goes a long way.
Materials: Most wood is by nature biodegradable, so anything not built of treated lumber (or rot resistant species such as teak, redwood, or cedar) will rot and break down with surprising speed. Glue and Finish: Most standard furniture is made with interior glues and finishes that are meant for climate-controlled buildings. Choose the Right Finish: Just as a long-sleeved shirt provides protection from sunburn, multiple coats of an exterior finish help protect furniture from UV rays as well as moisture. Sand First: Before painting, sand the surface down to bare wood (or use a chemical wood stripper), so your primer will adhere well to the wood. Seal Completely: Don’t leave any of the wood unfinished – seal every nook and cranny and fill all cracks. Recoat Regularly: Even the best finishes wear and break down over time when exposed to the elements, so plan on recoating your furniture every year or two.
In the first picture, that outdoor furniture and patio decor bring indoor elegance to outdoor display.
Well, I am almost through refinishing the 60 inch round wooden table that I referred to in a previous comment. I was thinkin gof using Epifanes High Gloss Marine finish to seal my repurposed exterior dining table. I just want to seal the table good so that it will last a long time and I’m not sure what product to use to not get a glossy finish so your Matte finish on the last coat is intriuguing. My poor $600 solid wood round dining table ended up in my porch for it not at all goes with my new house geometry!

I do sculpture in found wood and am considering doing some pieces for permanent outdoor display. WOODRx utilizes advanced technology that combines the superior durability characteristics of premium 100% acrylic coatings with easy application and simple long term maintenance. Maintenance is usually required on most all outdoor elements if you want to extend the material’s life, not just furniture. We try to describe below general means and methods to apply teak oil or sealers if desired, even though it is certainly not required. Plus, if you buff the wood aggressively with cloth the natural oils will migrate to the surface and provide a beautiful satin look. This silvery gray 'patina' which develops over time gives teak furniture a distinctive appearance. These methods should not be used at all as any metal residue left in the grain will rust and discolor the wood.
The use of store bought teak oil or sealers won't greatly increase the life of teak, but it does enhance the color somewhat and can also help a little to prevent stains from seeping into the wood grain.
To speed things up, we recommend placing the teak over a painter’s cloth or plastic drop cloth, sand off any gray color, then spray the sealer on, then back brush or wipe with cloth.
Letting the new teak acclimatize allows the sealer to adhere properly to the wood surfaces. Boat people at marinas and yacht harbors often find themselves at peace when caring for their wood work.
We do however offer advice on how to care for teak outdoor furniture and guidance on what products may be best for your location and furniture type. Based on how quickly my bench was deteriorating, it soon became evident that unless I wanted a pile of rotten splinters on my porch, I needed to seal and refinish the bench and fast!
Whether you’re turning a ladder-back chair into a flower planter or want to put your favorite wooden rocker on the porch, here are some tips on how to get the most life out of wood furniture in the garden. When placed outdoors and exposed to fluctuating temperatures and moisture levels, the glue in joints can come loose and the finish degrade.
I want to put on a sealer that is durable and thick also thinking about doing broken glass in the top of table. So it is no surprise that there would be many different ways to maintain teak outdoor furniture, as well as marine teak. We strongly do not recommend applying stains or varnish for outdoor use unless applied by a very experienced professional varnish applicator.
The silver gray color resulting from this natural aging process is considered by many to be very attractive and allows the furniture to blend in well with many outdoor environments.
High pressure water sprayers will blast out the wood fines and raise the wood grains causing a weakened rough surface.
1-2 days) sanding with a 120C grit of sandpaper followed by a 220 grit sandpaper, being sure to work only with the direction of the wood grains. If there are any unsightly dings or scratches, we recommend some sanding (120 grit) sand paper and then follow with a light sanding (220 grit) over all viewable and touchable surfaces to give your furniture a smooth silky touch. To stand up to the elements outdoors, furniture needs to be made using waterproof glue and exterior finishes. Use furniture glides to raise the piece slightly off the ground so it doesn’t sit in puddles of rainwater. It was had always been an outdoor bench however time has had it’s wicked way with it. Teak furniture left in this state is easily maintained and needs no treatment whatsoever to give many years of service and this is about as easy as outdoor furniture maintenance can get!

After sanding you may wish to touch up with teak sealer or teak oil (try to match with whatever was previously used).
After rinsing be sure to dry the wood surfaces with a dry cloth to prevent dripping onto the chair cushions, decking or pavement below. Teak outdoor furniture has natural oils within the wood to preserve the wood from rot and decay, even without maintenance. Don’t mistake the natural teak oil actually found in the wood from store bought teak oil. Avoid deck stains or penetrating finishes that don’t offer enough protection for untreated wood outdoors.
But left uncared for or untreated with sealers or oils the color of the teakwood will soon turn a patina silvery grey if left mostly in the sun or dark grey if left in the shade year round. Regardless, teak outdoor furniture requires less costly maintenance than most other high end furniture types and offers a continuing rich natural look for many decades. At this point the surface of the furniture should be wiped down with a clean cotton cloth, carefully removing all surplus oil.
For a very small amount of teak furniture, you may consider just dipping a rag in the sealer and then rub on the teak wood. Learn more about the advantages of WOODRx wood sealer, the differences between WOODRx and traditional sealers, and why WOODRx is unique. DEAR STEVE: It's just as important to keep your better half happy as it is to clean and protect outdoor wood furniture.
Cleaning and sealing any outdoor wood is not much different from doing the same thing for a wood deck. Outdoor wood tables, chairs, fencing, wood play sets, arbors and so forth all take the same abuse from Mother Nature.
Some wood, including redwood, cedar and teak, contain varying degrees of natural wood preservatives. If water gets into the cracks, it soaks deeper into the wood, causing even greater expansion and contraction forces that cause the cracks to get deeper and wider.
You can see why it's important to treat all wood with a water repellent on a regular basis to prevent water from getting into the wood.
Do this every other year or so and your outdoor furniture and playset will look fantastic instead of resembling a 50-year-old fishing pier.
The high-pressure stream of water erodes the softer, lighter colored bands of spring wood that are found between the darker bands of summer wood grain. Once the wood is sanded, you should seal it with a pigmented synthetic resin water repellent. Some sealers require you to apply two coats within 15 minutes of each other to get maximum protection. You have to maintain a wet edge with the sealer, which means that you stain each piece of wood completely so that you don't stop working until you reach the end of that piece of wood or it intersects with another piece of wood. Failure to do this can result in very unattractive overlaps where the color of the sealer seems darker at the overlap area.
