If you’re already a carpenter and make money from your trade, then gaining more skills and qualifications will only see you progress further and be able to offer more services. An education in carpentry can be gained through paid apprenticeships, meaning you don’t need to fund your course yourself and will actually earn money as you study. Carpentry courses will give you a certificate or an associate degree, and they normally last between one and two years if you’re studying full time. The City and Guilds award in carpentry is designed to give students practical training in basic carpentry and joinery techniques, scaffolding, brickwork, painting and decorating, plastering, health and safety, and communication skills.

No – if you want to learn the basics there are plenty of evening classes or weekend workshops that cover most bases in a short period of time.
Carpenters are renowned for creating breath taking buildings, roofs and floors, yet some talented individuals go above and beyond.
We know a lot of people who own real motorbikes who simply leave it in the garage to polish every now and again. Sure, you were expecting to learn about cabinet making and how to use wood on construction sites, but a carpentry course could be the start of a hobby in woodwork. About 650 students study at the Skills Centre to gain the practical skills needed for careers in Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Engineering, Catering or Construction trades (Plumbing, Painting & Decorating, Electrical Installation and Carpentry). These skills will enable you to undertake a variety of tasks in most carpentry working environments. This will help you decide if you want to progress to a qualification and a career in Carpentry. If however, there is some reason which leads to you requiring additional training, additional fees will be payable.
Carpentry and joinery courses are great for developing your hand skills, with more specialist and traditional craft skills included. You could be a homebuilder’s assistant, a general contractor or a maintenance carpenter.
There are also part time courses available for working carpenters, allowing the flexibility for you to fit in both work and study.

This qualification is applicable to those who have no experience in the construction industry at all right up to experienced carpenters who wish to obtain diplomas. You’ll get a chance to create drawings, cut traditional joints, manufacture carpentry and joinery components like windows, doors and staircases, and also calculate and cost materials. An apprenticeship is a good way into the construction industry if you want to work as a carpenter, but if you just want to learn so you can fix things in your own home you don’t need to take an apprenticeship. You’ll also cover topics on erecting complex structural carcassing, maintaining carpentry components and using fixed and transportable machinery. Others will be more about working as a group to make something, learning along the way so it will be the skills you take home as opposed to a wooden object. Likewise, you can get qualified to work as a self employed carpenter without an apprenticeship – it just depends on how you like to learn. If you’re taking a shorter course it might not take you towards a carpentry career but it could take you to a whole new level of interior decoration with all your handmade wooden items. Finally, at 8a.m, carpenter Al showed up, clothes dusty and torn, face scratched and bruised, glasses bent.
