DIY Project Accent Furniture, How to make a cheap solid wood table top out of inexpensive lumber. With the furring strips glued and screwed into place, I flipped the table base over and placed it on the table top. At this point, the table top was still pretty rough, so I started with 100-grit sandpaper on my electric sander. I went over the top several times with the sander, being sure that the top was smooth and even, especially where the boards met. This next step is completely optional, but I wanted a completely smooth table top, so I used wood filler to fill in any gaps between the boards, and then sanded them perfectly smooth. Fill the hole with wood filler, let it dry completely, and then start again predrilling this time. I’m Shayna from The Wood Grain Cottage and I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am to be here for the Hello Summer Series! First, I flipped the table upside down and sprayed the legs with a gloss black spray paint.
While my hubby cut all the boards to the proper length, I used our electric sander with 60 grit sandpaper and sanded the top side of each board smooth. Then, to make sure the top was really secured, we used a level and made a mark on every picket on each middle support.
To make sure everything was really smooth, I used my electric sander with 120 grit sandpaper and went over the entire thing, being careful on each corner. Sand the side of the Table Top to remove any roughness or unevenness from sawing using a belt sander. Apply a thin coat of polyurethane to the top side and edge of the table top, and to all sides of the rail.
I bought a cheap dining room table from good will to use for my desk, it has a leaf in the middle to make it longer.
I haven’t done a table top other than a workbench(Plywood!) but I have done cabinets and beds. My hubby just busted my track on my table that puts the 2 pieces together (( just the track.)) and I was looking more for a French country look . It was in pretty good shape, but I wanted to make it look a bit more custom and more our style. Because the stain is said to have the sealer included with it, I didn’t seal the top with an additional sealer.
If you prefer to stain you table, you may want to substitute for a different species of wood.
The table top will be 1 piece and the rail will consist of 3 pieces (top, middle and bottom).
I wanted to glue the leaf to the other two sides and thin fill in the holes with wood filler and I was advised by mom friend that it wouldnt work, but now I have proof cant wait to try it out!!!
I made a round top ,using your instructions and screwed it to the old top ,sanded and stained the legs to match the top .I over laped the old top by two inches . This does two things; protects the wood from spilled liquids and most importantly helps the spray adhesive adhere better.
The stain grade plywood usually has a pretty good stain surface and the construction of the plywood makes it pretty stable. After cutting the edge may have some minor voids, which can be filled with wood putty and sanded nice and smooth.
