But even after lots of questing and finishing the main game, which I thought had a pretty cool conclusion for the most part, there was a lot to be done.
The first occurs after completing the Thieves Guild and basically involves you staring at loading screens so you can complete about five hours' worth of quests that take about two seconds each before "restoring the Thieves Guild to its former glory" by completing more complex thievery quests in four major holds within Skyrim. That last point is another reason why I can't wait for Mass Effect 3 to wash the bittersweet taste of Skyrim from my mouth.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is out today, and it's bound to be one of the biggest games of the year.
Making a stealthy warrior is a much simpler task in Skyrim than it was in Oblivion, thanks to the simplified system. Playing a pure mage is a viable play style in Skyrim without having to worry about dying in every fight. If the typical RPG archetypes I laid out above don't exactly sound like your ideal character, and you'd rather roll a custom class, you'll want to know the racial bonuses for each of Skyrim's ten playable races.
Once you've created your character, and you have your plan for how you want to play, you can start your journey through the land of Skyrim. Bioware definitely gets what makes an RPG great more so than Bethesda does because in Mass Effect, for example, my decisions matter.
Unlike in Oblivion, there are clear parts not intended for low level characters, and trust me, the game will make it clear.
But I also am now both apprehensive about playing another RPG (because of how much time this one sucked out for a mostly anticlimactic reward) and excited to play one that does things correctly. One great thing about Skyrim is that no one plays it the same way, builds the same character or experiences the quests in the same manner.
Take a minute or two to look through the skills, and in conjunction with your racial selection, plan out how you'll be putting your points into perks. However, I buckled down, and even after wandering around sidequesting for a month, finished the main quest. Skyrim immersed me in a world and then constantly found ways to disrupt my immersion by completely making all of my decisions mean nothing. Start off with the Wood Elf as your race - even though Khajiit get a larger bonus to sneak, the bonuses that the Bosmer get will be more useful in keeping you alive and helping you strike from the shadows. When you spend a lot of time with the game, you realize just how easy that system is to exploit and just how slowly it works at higher levels. With the revamped leveling system, Skyrim is a lot more structured towards building your character into a more traditional archetype.
Focus on archery as your main method of dealing damage, using poisons you make with your boosted alchemy skill to deal even more damage. Really though, the beauty of games like Skyrim is the level of freedom they give the player. There's still room to branch out and make a balanced character, but you'll probably miss out on the higher level perks for some skills. Skyrim would have benefited from a longer main quest that used your decisions to move you through guilds and sidequests as appropriate to your character, not just because the developers put them there.
You'll be absorbing a lot of damage, and able to deal a lot of damage with the magic weapons you'll make.
Skyrim's own sons have a 10 point boost to two-handed, so you can still go the big damage route, but their 5 point boosts give you a really level combat field to start with - Block, Light Armor, One-Handed, Smithing and Speech.
