After our pigs escaped the electric net fence AGAIN, we were seeking out better ways to fence them in. Simply place each pallet perpendicular to the previous one, and try to line up some of the thicker frame wood if you can. Pallets are usually found in abundance in most towns in the US and most other industrial towns and cities. Thanks for the stamp info, I am making a fence for my dogs and only will use the heat treated pallets. Thanks BARC for composting food waste on our site, providing us with copious free organic matter and feed for pigs and chickens!
2Pick up free wooden pallets from local businesses or from postings on Internet marketplaces.
5Turn the pallets over on the ground and remove every other slat, but leave the two larger slats on each end of the pallets.
10Insert two 6-inch galvanized screws at the top, middle and bottom of the pallet and drive them into the landscape timbers with a drill.
11Continue adding pallets and landscape timbers, one at a time, until your fence is completed, but leave one area open for a gate that is the same horizontal length as the pallets.
12Stretch a chalk line along one side of the fence about an inch above the top screws on the pallets. 1Prepare a pallet for the gate in the same manner as for the fencing by removing all back slats and every other front slat.
3Place a gate latch in the center of the gate on the opposite side from the hinges and screw it in place. Cutting the tops of a pallet fence to resemble a picket fence adds style to the fence and allows the tops to shed water.
The bricks that support the pallets raise them off the ground for installation so the pallets do not touch the ground and decompose prematurely. Landscape timbers are treated wood and cost about 30 percent to 50 percent less than fence posts.
Andy Gale of Bay Area Recycling for Charities mentioned that they had an abundance of pallets and we could use them to build a perimeter fence.
I don’t mind patching up the fence every now and then with some of the cast-off slab wood (bark wood) from the local saw mill. Most of the time the pigs will be contained in smaller electric wire plots, within the larger pallet fenced area. Although there are some pallet standards, you will probably find many different shapes and sizes.
Some companies will want to return their pallets because they get a deposit, but often they’ll have cast offs. In order to kill any bugs that might be living in the wood, pallets are either heat treated or treated with Methyl bromide. You can cut costs by installing your own fence using recycled rather than factory-fresh materials. Secure the amount of linear footage that you need plus an additional 10 percent to account for some unusable or damaged pallets. Dig two holes that are 2 feet deep and 4 inches around with the centers at the same distance as the pallet length. Place the pallet on top of the two bricks with the left and right sides resting on the center of the landscape timbers. It seemed like a great idea to me, especially considering that most of the fencing I was pricing out was in the range of 1000s of dollars.
This is so that they don’t destroy the fence by using it as a scratching post or try to dig under it. Sometimes they will leave pallets out at the road for anyone to take freely, or you might have to inquire about them inside.
During the Montreal Protocol talks, in which substances causing ozone depletion were banned, methyl bromide got an exemption when the pallet industry argued that it was necessary to their trade and to prevent the spread of harmful species. But now I’ve built a movable pig tractor that just uses palletes and no electric fencing and haven’t had one escape! Companies receive merchandise deliveries on wood pallets that they will give away free to people who will pick them up. If a pallet has damaged framework in the center of the two sides of slats, lay these aside.
All except Canada, who still doesn’t treat their pallets with anything except pressure and high temperatures. You can fence your yard on an extreme budget by using pallets that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Press both handles outward to secure the soil in the jaws and place the soil near the hole. But if you can acquire some of the longer 8 or 10ft pallets, then you’ll need much fewer.
