General Rules for Selecting the Correct Drill Point for Your ApplicationLength of Drill Point or Flute = Maximum Material Thickness Drilling of entire metal thickness must be finished before threads engage into steel. We have self-feeding fastening tools available, and fasteners and tools for wood & composite decking for dock builders.
Wood screws are suitable for most home repairs, but there are other types appropriate for specific jobs. FastenersFasteners attach two materials or objects together, which makes them a necessary part of home repairs. If the threads engage before drilling operation is complete, the point will grind off due to excessive driving force.
Total thickness to be drilled includes multiple sheets, insulation and "empty" space between materials to be fastened. Self Drilling Screws - designed for power driving wood or metal to metal without drilling a pilot hole. Flathead screws are almost always countersunk into the material being fastened so the head of the screw is flush with (or lower than) the surface. The wings bore a hole in wood, preventing thread engagement during drilling, the wings break off when they hit steel. Like other fasteners, they are also made with coatings -- brass, copper, nickel, zinc, cadmium, and galvanized -- that help deter rust.
But for larger jobs and more holding power, lead expansion anchors and lag screws are used. They are driven with a wrench and are used primarily for fastening to masonry or wood framing.
