A hinge mortise is the shallow cut made in the edge of a door and the door jamb that mirrors the size and thickness of the door hinge. Hinge mortises on a door are often cut by machine with a router and straight bit, but you can cut mortises by hand using a hammer and chisel as well.
Position the chisel on the scored line with the chisel perpendicular to the door or jamb and the bevel side of the chisel facing toward the mortise. Lightly tap the chisel with a hammer around the perimeter of the mortise to deepen the scored line. Hold the chisel flat and use it to clean out the waste, so the mortise is the same depth as the hinge. Screw the hinge to the door and jamb, so the top of the hinge is flush with the door edge and door jamb. Danny Lipford: Now, installing a door at your house is fairly easy, but to recess hinges like this is a little more of a challenge. To adjust my closet door, I loosened the hinges where the gap was nearly non-existent and tightened the hinges where the gaps were large. I used the sanding attachment on my dremel and it made quick work of removing the wood within the hinge cut out. I need to apply your solutions to SEVERAL doors in my house … or, just share your blog post with my husband so HE can do it. My door in this post has swelled over time (or the doorway has swelled) and it won’t close anymore. Or you could follow this tutorial on youtube that I just used to fix my door in about 2 minutes. Take half and line it up at a hinge mark, knuckles toward the outswinging door face and its straight side ⅛ inch from the edge.
DOOR Measure the width of your opening, jamb to jamb, in three places (top, middle, bottom) and the height, threshold to jamb, in three places.
The hinge mortise allows the hinge to be mounted flush with the jamb and door so the door will close properly. Just remember to keep the bevel end of the chisel facing toward the waste area, so you wind up with a nice, crisp line.
For my closet door, I need to move the top slightly to the right and the bottom in to the left. On my closet door (shown above) I loosened the top hinge screws to increase the gap and tightened the bottom hinge screws to reduce the gap.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the one hinge did not sit flush with the door frame. She has accidently closed him in rooms while I was at work or out mowing the yard and he has promptly dug his way through the door. Carefully make a series of cuts, or kerfs, between the scored lines with a chisel and mallet. Screw the hinge directly to the edge of the door, and then mark its outline with a utility knife.
And then hold the chisel perfectly vertical, and make a series of cuts about an eighth-inch apart all the way across the waste area. There has been one project that has been so close to completion for a weeks now. With the hanging of our bedroom door, all of the main level interior doors have been replaced. The goal is to remove some wood from the door or the frame so that the hinge can sit flush with the frame.
Then hold the hinge edge against the face of the door under the outline and draw a line under it. Sighting the chisel from the door face, tap lightly until each cut is at the depth of the guide lines. That being said, all of the doors we purchased months ago have been hung and that feels pretty good. When we moved in, all 7 main floor doors were stained plywood lauan doors. The hinges are now laying very flat in there, but still there is decent size gap, about half the size as before but the door will not close. Before buying a mortise lock, make sure the distance from the spindle hole to the keyhole matches the one on the backplate you choose, and that the lock body isn't too thick to fit your door.
What I dont under stand is, I have the old door and measuring down, this door is exactly the same size! It was totally unnecessary.Big heavy doors for small dark closets have never really made sense to me. HINGESYou will likely need three to hanadle the weight of a solid-wood door or solid-core door. Overall I think the white six panel doors really change the character of the bedroom and provide some nice contrast. Unfortunately the whole mud room that this doorway is in is painted with that thick glossy stuff. Someday in the near future, maybe after we rip up the carpet and get the floors refinished, we can touch up all the door frames and trim.

Posted on February 4, 2012 by Megan 1 I know, just what you wanted…more boring stories about our interior doors.
Replacing all of the interior doors is a really long and drawn out process.First you have to paint one side, wait for it to dry, then paint the other. As Megan mentioned in our first post about the doors, we ordered the bathroom door and 2 bi-fold doors for our office closets. Unlike the regular doors, the bi-fold doors didn’t require a door knob installation, so that was a bonus. They did, however require us to install a track for them to run on.The track is a fairly easy concept to grasp, and I enjoyed how quickly the doors went up.
The track system is fairly simple and combines a track installed above the door, and a bracket on floor screwed into the jamb.Once the doors were hung, they needed some adjustment. Then as soon as they closed properly and we’d stepped back we noticed there was a lot of extra space above the door. Next we needed to prep the door frame to install the hinges on the door.As you can see, the old hinges were rusty and looked as if they were installed when the house was built. With a chisel and the stensil attached, the cutout for the hinge can be chipped away easily.
There is some weird satisfaction that I got from chiseling, and it only got more enjoyable as the project went on.
Not perfect, and not without some adjustments, but it does in fact fit into our door frame. Woo hoo!The door is about a half inch too short and we had some major light leakage coming through the top of the doorway. Underneath the old hinges was a layer of paint, and then a layer of stain and then the wood. I chiseled away a little bit of the frame at the bottom and at the top around the hinge cutouts. No biggie, just a lot of chiseling. I was a little intimidated by the idea of hanging a door at first, but its really not all that complicated.
